Convert your 2D image (JPG or PNG) into an SVG file

Hey everyone! I have 2d images I want to convert to 3d files. I used the Image to 3D tool and saved the download but I understand I need to use a different app or program to convert THAT file to a 3d image. Can anyone direct me to where I can do that for free?

Hello - you can use Inkscape to convert raster images into vectors and save them as SVGs. Here’s a tutorial video: https://youtu.be/_LtWVktKhDg?si=TuICYvl55CUZoLTs

If you find InkScape too complex or hard to use (it’s open source, so…) I have had good results from the awfully-named “Super Vectorizer Pro”. $15 on the Mac App Store, or much more direct from their own website.

One new option is Affinity 3 which is free and easier to use than Inkscape.

In the following image, you can see a raster on the left and the converted vector on the right. Just like other tools, the results will be better when using high-res rasters with good contrast (such as this example from a work in the public domain).

Steps to convert to vector SVG using Affinity:

  • Add a raster to your artboard
  • Select the raster on your arbor
  • Choose Vector > Image Trace
  • Experiment with the two sliders to adjust your settings.
  • Select the vector and choose File > Export
  • Choose the SVG file type and the change Area to “Selection” if you have the vector selected

Or you can do the same thing with bambu suite :smirk: although not the most user-friendly software.

Lightburn can convert an image into an SVG too. Import the image, trace it, delete the image and then export the trace as an SVG. I just did this last night on a PNG that would not transfer correctly using Inkscape, it came out black for some reason, but the traced export worked properly. I then used Tinkercad to make a 3D STL and imported that into Studio. Since what I wanted was to have it backed, I flipped it over and added a part to the back of it, then flipped it back over, selected the filaments and printed it.
