Cooling Fan Running Slowly - Which one? Suppliers?

Hi folks,

My toolhead fan is making a broken rattle noise. I have raised a support request, but Im in the middle of trying to complete some important prints and can’t spend 3 weeks going back and forth with support. I just need to replace the fan and get back working. There are none in the store.

  1. Is the upgraded fan just a drop-in replacement?
  2. I see some similar looking fans on Alibaba. Does anyone know an alternative supplier?

If you are asking whether the Enhanced Fan is a replacement for the hotend cooling fan, the answer is no. It is not.
The Enhanced Fan is a drop-in upgrade, but the two are different fans that serve the same general purpose.

A couple pointers. If mechanically the fan is going bad (which is what happened to all of my failures), you do not need to replace the entire shroud with the fan. You can save yourself some time by just swapping the new fan into the old shroud.

If you don’t have one, I highly suggest getting a good magnifying glass or a full fledged wearable one. The ribbon cables are extremely small and would be hard for someone to see with the the best eyesight there is. I’d also have a soft small set of tweezers handy.

2 ways you can tackle this. One takes a little more time but makes it easier on yourself. The other saves time but makes it harder.

You can have the entire toolhead / rail and harness off in about 10 minutes, taking off the belt clamps, rail screws, buffer, and a few pop out panels that expose the wire clips and harness connectors so the entire thing can be worked on in front of you, on a bench etc.

You can also just go at it from looking down at it from the rear with the toolhead all in place. Either way, it’s not very time consuming if you have the right tools. If you don’t have the right tools, or understand ribben cables / connectors, it will take longer.

There’s a lot of people saying this is some sort of nightmare. It really is not. The hardest part is lining up the cables on reentry. I’ve replaced a quite a few of them and it takes around 15 minutes.

Right tools do make all the difference in the world though.

Still waiting for my replacement parts but I took your advice & bought a magnifying glass with a light. It did help taking everything apart. Hopefully won’t be waiting too much longer…:neutral_face:

Anyone have feedback on these fans?

I ordered them from amazon in addition to the official bambu ones. They haven’t arrived yet. I followed this guide to strip it down, it wasn’t too bad, just a bit fiddly: https://youtu.be/wda42prUay0?is=q8tI-mGX8IwDOgnt

But when you think about this repair, you have something like 12 screws total (maybe even less). Everyone of them can be taken out with an electric / cordless screwdriver.

And then you have around 8-10 (off memory again) electrical connectors / ribbon cables. All of those are either pull straight off, or a little locking tab that releases with your fingers in one direction.

So you can imagine, cordless tool can take off 12 screws that are easily accessed in seconds. And all those ribbon cables (removing them) doesn’t take much more.

The hardest part is you really do need a magnifying glass of some sort (I highly suggest one that has a built in bright light) to make sure you get the cables properly inserted back in. These cables have areas / pins that you really can’t see with the naked eye. They are that small.

So that’s the time consuming part. Just putting those 8-10 cables back together. And you can save yourself a significant amount of time if you simply swap out the fan from the housing (if you know the housing is good) instead of replacing the entire fan shroud and fan as an entire assembly.

No reason to take it apart that much further if you know it’s just the bearing in the fan that was bad.

I think after you do it once, you won’t want to do it again, but you’ll also think to yourself that it wasn’t as bad as some people are saying it is. Now without a magnifying glass of some sort, I wouldn’t even attempt it. You literally can’t see what you are doing on the cables without it.

I installed my new cooling fan. It was a complete PITA. Now Im getting this error when I turn the machine back on, do I need to strip the entire thing again or does anyone have suggestions of things to check first? :pensive_face:

Yes, the lifting motor sensor connector needs attention.

Didn’t work unfortunately, but thank you. Then I managed to tear the cable off completely from the board. Waiting for support to respond. There are none of this type of hall sensor listed in the store. :neutral_face:

This is the 3rd week I can’t use my printer and I really need some help here to get back up and running.

Current issue is partly my own fault (Broken cable) and partly not my fault (Lifting hall sensor original error before I broke the cable), but I just need to get back up and running. :folded_hands: Please help!
