Defective Print

I downloaded an Owl Vase STL and every time I print it, there is a defect on the bottom and the side. Is the STL defective or printer settings?

The base of the model isn’t sitting flat on the printer bed in the slicer. You can see the two contact points so it’s a problem with the flatness of the model. Suggest lowering the model into the bed a couple layers or using the cut tool to flatten them bottom.

@JonRaymond is spot on and the evidence is in your first photo.

Here’s how that looks when you lower the object below the print bed. Note that I included a triangle and circle below the main Cylinder object for exaggerated affect. But as you lower the objects, you can see how the lines first clip and then get trimmed below the print surface. Use the (M)ove command and lower it in the Z(blue) axis.

question about that, is the portion of the object below the plate just ignored by the slicer? Meaning shouldn’t be any different from cutting the object and then laying it flat?

Correct. When one moves an object below the build plate plane, it has the same affect as if one cut the model. The difference is, unlike cut where parts are split or discarded, below-plane keeps the entire model intact. This has other uses such as when one want to print a pesky model but the geometry makes finding the perfect angle difficult and one doesn’t want to use the cut with dowel pins or plugs option.

Excellent observation and fix. Thanks
