Different Filament “strands” in the final layers of prints.

I do a lot of prints where the first 10-13mm is a single colour and the last 4mm is a different colour.

When it comes to the final layers of the whole print, strands of filament (different colour) from the first 10-13mm appear, ruining the print.

The issue doesn’t affect every print, but the chances of it happening will persist for long periods (weeks). Then, I will have periods where it doesn’t affect prints before returning seemingly at random.

This issue occurs across all print profiles and filament types. I primarily used Bambu, but also experimented with Elegoo PLA, utilising the Bambu profile/generic PLA profiles.

It is usually the initial colour that appears in the final layers of the second colour, so if it’s red to white, then red “strands” appear etc.

The presentation can be a small light “strand” to heavier imperfections, as pictured.

I have tried increasing the flush volume, but as far as I can see, it is only the last few layers that are affected. I regularly clean the nozzle. I did a nozzle swap which initially fixed the issue, before it came back a few weeks later.

You should look for improvement of nozzle wiper.

Back in the day, we manually wipe nozzle with wire brush during filament change mid print.

The only thing that makes me wonder about that is that it seems to print 17 layers (on this model at least) before it gets to the final top shell layers - which seems to be where the problem starts.

Everytime nozzle extrudes and glides on top of previously printed strand, it picks up a little bit of plastic outside of the nozzle. After sometime, this amount accumulates and has enough weight so that the cooling fan blows it off the nozzle, eventually deposits somewhere on your print. In your case, it just happens to be on the top surface.

But if you have a tall print, it usually deposits that burned blob on the outer wall, because at that location, wind blows stronger in one direction due to the physical shape, i.e. at the edge of the print.

Imagine if you have this wiper and you wipe the nozzle every single layer before printing the prime tower

But that is likely manually modifying g-code of each print.
