I just notice that before the actual printing (toolhead homing) the extruder clicks for a bit. It is obviously skipping steps because the filament not hot enough to be pushed or pulled. I don’t know if this is a firmware bug or bambu studio bug but this could damage the gear overtime.
I’m confident enough that this is not about filament stuck or something because when in the actual printing part (nozzle is hot enough) I don’t experience this sudden clicking sound.
Firmware 01.04.00.00
I’ve seen this on my printer too but do not remember if it’s always done that or only on 1.04.
I haven’t had the extruder apart but this acts like it has some kind of breakover clutch built in (similar to some cordless drills) so if the gear is jammed it won’t cause damage. If someone knows one way or the other, would be nice to know.
I’ve seen another discussion which states that it was intentional (from the research group of bambulab) and it is not the gear that is skipping steps but the stepper motor. It was done as additional tension for the hotend to enable more accurate bed leveling (maybe to avoid the hotend from sliding up). I don’t know even though I now know this is intensional, It still bugs me. This ‘feature’, I didn’t have this in firmware 1.02.
