I noticed that a comment i made on a model recently is not showing up in my history. It wasn’t bad, just pointed out to the designer that they had two other plates in the profile, not related to the model and they may want to remove them.
It appears the original model was removed and reuploaded without the other plates.
My original comment was gone from model profile, as I expected.
But I didn’t expect it to dissappear from my activity comments list.
It should not be removed from my activity, because of the changes by others.
The comments I have made should remain in my activity unless I delete them.
This is poor data management, even possibly misuse under GDPR rules.
If it’s only in your activity what good does it do? I mean, why would it matter if only you can see it? I don’t see the point. Admittingly I haven’t had coffee yet.
Imagine the scenario where your comment points out problems. The designer takes offence, reports your comment, takes down the model and re uploads. You then receive a makerworld tug about conduct.
Now you can’t defend yourself, because your comment has disappeared, you cannot show your comment was valid, not offensive and that it’s just a malicious report by an aggrieved user.
You say if others can’t see it what does it matter. Whether other can see it is irrelevant since it’s the case that it’s my data, my record of comments, I use it to reference my interactions with others. So it’s ownership is mine and it’s deletion or removal is mine too.
That’s quite an imagination. If the designer doesn’t like your comment he simply reports it. It will be removed. There’s no need to re-post it to avoid comments and this in itself is against rules. Removing negative comments is not that hard, right or wrong.
Posting a comment that is an honest review or honest suggestion will not cause a warning from Makerworld.
I think you’re a little paranoid here. I mean that sincerely. There is no need. Even if you slammed the user hard in the comment section you would not even receive a smack on the wrist unless you continue to push it, or make such negative (not constructive) remarks on other models or harass the original user.
I suggest screenshots if you see your comments disappear on a regular basis. “Your” comments are made on a public forum under the agreement you made to sign up and post. IF those comments are posted it’s under policy you agreed to.
If your real fear is being “punished” by Makerworld or BL you can rest assured they have bigger fish to fry. You will have to go out of your way to get banned or in any trouble. By that time you KNOW you’re doing something wrong.
The real question is why did the user take down the model and then reupload when it could have been edited?
You have no right to data ownership when you post on a public forum, even the most boilerplate TOS/TOU will state that anything you post on the site grants the site owner the right to modify/delete/transfer that content. That’s a basic principle of forum management and moderation.
As for your concern over not being able to defend yourself because the comment was reported then deleted by the person reporting—the report itself will include a log of the reported comment as part of the report. MW will see the comment itself so if you’re getting warned, it’s because they’ve seen it and decided it’s warn-worthy. The fact you can no longer see it would be immaterial to the matter.
This is a whole lot of worrying about nothing and tbh I’ve never encountered a site that preserves comments made on removed content. Form forums to reddit to youtube to twitter to facebook. It’s just not how it works so you’re going to have to temper your expectations here.
I get all your comments, and understand them. I have a background where data ownership was a major factor in systems design. Deleting any data submitted by owner was a no no, without their consent or if they deleted it themselves.
So it’s not paranoia, it’s just simply a case of its my data, don’t delete from my account.
The examples are the scenarios that can happen, not something I worry over.
I think where your background stems from is completely disconnected from spaces such as this. You have no right to data ownership in a space such as a forum—the owners of the space can and will remove your data and there’s nothing you can do about it. From my experience data ownership isn’t a mandate or principle, but a tool for accountability when it comes to high-value or critical data. Your comments on someone’s model are neither of those.
The information you publish onto the forum is in public forum. The information in your activity is not. Given your analogy the forum owns and has a right to do what it wants with your data.
So I take it if they publish your details, your email, password you would be OK with that?
If you truly have a relevant background, you’d know that’s a disingenuous question. Companies are required to manage your data in specific ways, be they in accordance with their terms of use or the law/local regulations such as GDPR. Also there’s the fact that data about you is not the same as data you create and upload (which includes comments), so again that’s not an intellectually honest question.
You do not own the data you put on this site, there is no concept of data ownership in that sense. Data ownership simply means “who is responsible for this data in case something goes wrong with it”. It’s more “data liability” than ownership. In the case of sites like MW when it comes to comments etc, MW has data liability, which is why they can get in trouble if people post illegal content for example.
what exactly does it benefit you to have it in your activity log? nevermind i didnt realize you rambled on to a second post until after I posted this question. Looks like many others gave you some points to consider though so im out…
OK, our views differ, general view i hear is that: it’s a public forum, I don’t own my comments, even those that are in my activity, the site owners can delete it if they wish. Which in the extreme they could choose to arbitrary delete your data for everything over say 12 months old, which could include your models on the servers.
Well I am not comfortable with that, but if you are that’s fine, our views will have to differ.
Are you new to the internet? This is how literally every site that allows user uploaded content works. It’s not about who is or is not comfortable with it, it’s simply a fact of how things work. Expecting it to work any other way feels unreasonable and ungrounded in reality.
I think this a hill not worth dying on and you’re making a mountain out of an ant hill with this one. There are way more serious things wrong with the world and data ownership than your activity feed being linked to a post in a database. Thats exactly what it is, a link. When it’s deleted, the reference is removed as well. They don’t maintain two different tables just for your activity feed to have some kind of nostalgia.
Also this forum is not unique to this company, it’s a COTS product that is used by other companies as well. If you want to take issue with it, go to the forum maker. If you want to take issue with maker world, find out who designed it and take it up with them.
This is not a financial transaction system, it’s a comment system.
You are free to seek out a device and company that handles your data in the way you’re looking for. No one is forcing you to use the BL printer. Keep in mind though you agreed to the terms of both how the printer handles data and how MW handles data when you agree to the terms and conditions. Food for thought. Be careful when you find that golden unicorn that you read those terms and conditions to be certain you will feel comfortable.
