Do you need a new filament buffer when getting the AMS 2 Pro? The site is not very clear… I am wanting to order an AMS 2 Pro, and if I need a new filament buffer feel like I might as well get the 4 port Hub instead to have the option for more AMS in the future. Not sure I plan to put more than 1 AMS on this printer though. As I have my other P1S set up with multiple AMS.
If you have one AMS or one AMS 2 Pro they normally work with the buffer, the buffer on the P1S is sufficient.
If you have more than one AMS or AMS 2 Pro, in any combination, you require a hub, the one that works with the P1S is sufficient.
It is technically possible to hook an AMS and/or AMS 2 Pro to the external input or using a 4-1 adapter to the external input the choice is yours.
The AMS 2 Pro does require a power adapter that the P1S does not have.
Remember, the buffer came with the P1S, the hub is an optional extra.
This is absent putting on different PTFE splitters.
The PRINTER can drive 4 AMS devices.
The printer, with the BUFFER installed, will drive a single AMS. It has a single PTFE input port. It does not care what type of AMS it is.
The printer, with the AMS HUB installed, has 4 input ports. The printer will drive any combination of feeders that adds up to 4 AMS.
I have (2 AMS) + (1 AMS 2 Pro) + (1 AMS HT) = 4 AMS devices.
The recent hiccup with the firmware was an issue where to date I still am not sure what exactly was the root problem. It seemed like some people were having issues communicating between the printer and the AMS.
If I pull up the firmware via the touchpad on my P1S, here is what you get.

This is what I assumed. Thanks for the reply.
The AMS 2 Pro page on the store does not make this clear. I know I have a buffer, and I do not see anywhere where there is a new one. The “upgrade kits” they sell are offered with the buffer and the power adapter or just the power adapter for the dryer.
It has to do with whether you bought just the printer or a printer/AMS Combo.
You buy just the printer, I assume there is no buffer in the box.
The combo, which I bought, comes with a buffer because you need it for the single AMS to function.
If you bought a combo originally (with buffer), and you are buying a second AMS, you need the HUB. Because your AMS count is now > 1.
You are very welcome.
I think they intentionally confused it, as there is no other plausible explanation for how they promoted it.
My sentiments exactly. When I first saw the buffer being sold as sort of an “upgrade kit” in and around timing of the release of the HT is really confusing to someone newly arriving at an AMS purchase.
