Proto-pasta makes some fun filament, but my time is too valuable to screw with their cardboard spools. How big a consideration is native AMS compatibility in your filament selection?
most people print a respooled and just transfer the spool in under 10 minutes.
And yes, I have used cheep/recycled filament. It has… interesting challenges. If your time is not worth the transfer time, don’t use them. they are a pain.

Just print the rings that go around the outside of the spool. Clips on in 2 seconds.
In terms of the filament itself, I have run so many filaments that are not supposed to be AMS compatible with almost no issues. Maybe not best in the long run, but its not like one spool of some carbon or metal filled filament is immediately going to break everything.
I used to buy a lot of Bambu filament. I bought some of the TPU for AMS this year, but that will be the last bambu filament I ever buy. It’s not worth the extra money it costs. It’s not worth the time it takes to get to me, and lately, it hasn’t been in stock when you ‘need’ it.
Rip the ends off and put them on a real spool. It gets easier the more you do it, and it works great.
Sure, and I either try to use them in the AMS regardless (TPU works surprisingly well in a properly set up AMS HT), or I’ll slap a Bambu RFID tag on the spool of whatvever it is, or most recently, I’ll use the TPU assist module to push it.
