Does a solid base affect Printer (A1)

My A1 flings its plate about with a lot of force and its sitting on a filing cabinet that shakes like crazy.

Prints are ok buut I wondered if they would improve or if there are benefits to having a really sturdy base.

I know in the hifi world eliminating vibration for turntable and speakers is reckoned to have a big effect on the equipment performance so just wondered if that applies to 3d printers.

People often put their printers on a paver or other heavy base, as opposed to the sandbags or rubber things used under turntables. Adding mass lessens vibration at the source, whereas flexible mounts would just confine the vibration to the printer itself and probably make it move even more.

(The printer’s hard rubber feet are for friction, not isolation.)

In my experience:

  1. On an already wobbly table, adding mass just makes it wobblier, with a lower wobble frequency. Not recommended.
  2. On a stiff table, adding mass makes the printer quieter, but there’s no impact on print quality. Print quality is already good from the table alone.

Mine is on a 60-lb concrete paver with six rolled-up socks underneath on a rigid table.

In the old days it made far more difference, in these days, far less.

That doesn’t mean you shouldn’t try though.

Instability can introduce ringing in the completed model. Unexpected movement can also occur, causing the printer to ‘walk’ off the surface.

More stable is better.

Less requires potential compromise and monitoring.

All my printers that fit one sit on top of a concrete paver. Mass is the easiest and quickest solution. They don’t make the frame weigh 200 lbs because shipping would be awful, but the engineers probably kinda wanted to
