Does the AMS HT make sense for me ? PA and TPU

I was considering getting a AMS HT to replace my external spool holder, and use it for tpu ( with the TPU assist module) and the ocational PA print.

(and probably the ocational time if I want a sixth colour on my X2D, but that happens extremely rare)

Does it actually get hot enough to dry PA ? (while printing), does it cause to much drag on tpu?

Are there any better options ?

Yes HT can dry filaments, up to and including PPS. People say PPS can be, it’s on the borderline.

You can print TPU via the feeder and have the HT drying at the same time, just don’t have it set to rotate.

Depending on the particular TPU you’re printing with, and provided you have an extremely smooth and reasonably short filament path, you can feed some TPUs with the AMS HT.

Well, I am not intending to use it feed TPU using the motor, just the TPU port into the TPU assist module.

Motorized feeding will be reserved for AMS compatible filaments.

It will probably “float” around my setup a bit, between the right nozzle, TPU, abrasives, etc, wherever it’s most useful for a project.

I have an AMS HT that I have been using exclusively for TPU and PA. I have it set close to my printer so that the path from the bypass outlet to the connector on the printer is very short. I have an X1-Carbon and have had no problems with it feeding.

I bought AMS HT for running PA6-CF, which is prone to absorbing moisture quickly just like TPU. The AMS-HT has a bypass port that allows us to feed filament directly into the extruder, which is recommended for TPU. I printed Y-connector, which sits just on the outside of the main inlet and connects both the main port and bypass port of the AMS-HT. I also added a AMS-HT PFTE Adapter (found on Makerworld) printed with PA6-CF and added it to the bypass port with a PFTE connector. This allowed me have a stable/secure connection of both the bypass port and main port of the AMS-HT continuously while also being able to disconnect either one quickly. Now I can feed material from the AMS-HT through either port, securely connected to the same path toward the extruder and dry while printing. With the PFTE connections secured there’s no major air gaps from either port so no worries. I used this setup to print TPU and compared the result to the same part I printed without the AMS-HT - the result shows a clear advantage since I took advantage of the AMS-HT drying features and spent time to set it up well. This is a longwinded way of saying YES - having AMS-HT for printing TPU absolutely makes sense. Sidenote… PA6-CF, being a super stiff and brittle material printed easily from the bypass port while drying at the same time. I did manage to get an automatic feed through the main AMS-HT port, but this was prone to issues so I prefer to use the bypass port stricly with this kind of material - printed over 60 parts out of ~300 that I need with no issues so far.

It’s currently feeding my aux nozzle, but will be swapped to the left nozzle external for PA and such.

Yeah the ideas really start to flow once you get your hands on one.

My HT arrived with a problem with the front sensor; there was crud in it, keeping it triggered all the time. Support helped me with that, and now it runs perfectly. It dries really nicely. I added the auxiliary feed unit, and that is awesome. It feeds the TPU into the aux tube, and I switch the tube at the print head. Found someone who designed a holder for the extra tube, and that is nice.

I would say my experience with the HT has been very positive and happy. The plugged sensor was a factory error, and caused a little tension, but the end result was worth the time.

My intention is to get the TPU assist module as well, but so far mine has performed perfectly.
