Does the purge tower have to start at the start of a print?

I’m trying a multicolour print with the ams, only the second time I’ve done it since I tried on my very first print with no idea what I was doing & I didn’t know what the purge tower was :rofl:

Anyway, this print I’m making today is black & white but the Black isn’t used until almost the end of the print (the characters tongue & eyes) so my question is, does the purge tower have to start right away? It seems like a waste of a lot of white filament as it constantly switches between the print & the tower before the colour actually changes :man_shrugging: I guess there must be a reason for this? Unless it can be changed & I just haven’t thought to look into it until now :thinking:

If it didn’t build the purge tower as it printed the print, when it came time to do the purge tower, the nozzle would be doing it in mid-air.

Ah of course, I did wonder about that after I posted :man_facepalming: because i’ve never actually watched a print I don’t think much about the mechanics of it, I was assuming the nozzle could just go back down to the plate when it started the tower, but obviously that’s absurd :joy:
