Early layers separation

Does any one know how to potentially solve this?
First couple layers always separates on the inside corner here.

0.4 nozzle, PEI smooth plate, default temps (220/220, 55/55) and only changed aux fan to 0%. X1C with door closed. Same issue with lower nozzle temps, not sure what to adjust.
Default generic PLA settings, 0.16 layers and only changed the wall order to outer/inner.

Using KingRoon PLA which has been working great for me. There is a 1mm fillet on that edge, but this only really started happening after I switched to the smooth PEI (and on this object only)

Calibrated X1C, Flow calibration, bed leveled…


I’ve found fillets have a tough go on my X1C. I’ve had to switch to chamfers if I want finished edges and not having strings come loose that never adhered properly.

I think it’s just the fine extrusion width compared to the curvature that offsets each extrusion. It’s basically an overhang that doesn’t attach well to the rest of the model - If I understood your use of fillet.

That makes sense. Weird that it reared its head after switching plates, and for some reason just this geometry. I have a mirrored piece that hasn’t had this issue yet, after 10+ prints.
I’ll have to try the chamfered edge for now, but there must be a tangible solution to this problem in settings besides changing all my models.

It could also be bed adhesion only doing it on an inside corner or radius. You linked it to a switch to smooth PEI too but I should have keyed more on that. Bed adhesion seems to change on these with age and Bambu calls them a consumable, but some here also report very long lifetimes.

Anyway, on PEI you could try increasing the bed temperature, but if it was like I originally thought and some of those strands aren’t on the first layer and aren’t touching the build plate it could be the fillet. I definitely have seen that.

If you haven’t washed you plate with soap and water, do that, not IPA.

Make a chamfer then make a fillet on the top edge of the chamfer so it still looks like a fillet.

Thanks for the suggestions.
I washed with soap and water, and 91%IPA+microfiber cloth in between. The first layer is actually adhering fine, it’s the second and subsequent layers that can’t adhere to each layer beneath it. I think it does haven something to do with it being a slight overhang, but I don’t know how to fix that. Maybe overhang speed needs to be lower (but not sure it’s counting that as an overhang).

I’m going to try the chamfer, if that’s the solution then it’s fine. The fillet isn’t integral to the design anyway.

With outer/inner, and an overhang, the filament on the edge can only contact the layer below on one corner. Being an inside corner, the nozzle tends to pull the filament away from even that one point of contact.

I’d expect inner/outer to provide more surface for the outer filament to adhere because it will touch the layer below and the inner wall on the same layer.

Interesting, that makes a ton of sense. I just worry about the outer wall quality as that was why I initially changed to outer/inner. Maybe I’ll try inner/outer on this object and see how it turns out!

Ugh I’m just confused because so far the mirror image of this object hasn’t had this issue. So I know the printer is capable of this. This is happening on two X1Cs, not just one. Either way, I’ll give these suggestions a try and report back, thanks guys

Okay I printed with inner/outer and that pretty much solved it, pretty much same quality of walls… Thank you!
