Elegoo spool (maybe others also) cardboard, with PLASTIC RIM

bought roll of elegoo rapid PETG. (used it before, worked well). automatically tore off cardboard, mounted it into bambu spool. BUT, when throwing out the CARDBOARD outer parts, i noticed the ELEGOO SPOOL edges are now coated in PLASTIC ?? meaning, they may be able to run in native format, not remounted to bamboo spool, since it has an embedded plastic running edge? has anyone else noticed this (or even from other companies), and have you tried using the native cardboard roll with plastic edge?

I ditch cardboard spools as quickly as possible. They are just a sponge to pick up moisture.

Do yourself a favour, for any cardboard spools you have and wish to use in the AMS, print a pair of the appropriate model rims and have a successful print every time.

Read all the notes so you get the best experience.

I haven’t used cardboard spools for a long while.

Give it a try and let us know how it goes. If this sealing of the carboard edge works inside AMS, it would be good to know.

The new hardened edges all manufacturers have started putting on cardboard makes them go thru roller-style AMS (AMS1, AMS2Pro, AMS HT, CFS, etc) just fine. Core-style AMS (AMS lite, AD5X, U1) still handles it like a champ.

2 hazards still with cardboard:

  1. If the spool’s outer rim is crushed or folded over, it’s not going to do roller-style AMS at all. Print rigid rims or respool it, don’t give yourself a headache. Roller AMS hate a noncircular perimeter and will jam over and over again. Still ok to throw in a core-style AMS.
  2. Cardboard holds water weight, so when drying and doing math, the math might be some water coming out of the cardboard too

thanks to everyone for replies. i may give them a try, OR use the link that MalcTheOracle provided. for most of them, it is not hard to switch the roll from cardboard (rip off edges) and put into the bambu roll, but it would be nice to be able to use the cardbaord.
