Elevated Text on prints destoyed by slicing

Hi all,

i am trying to add elevated text to surfaces. It looks good in the preview, but as soon as i slice it, i get imperfections, and not even a few.

Here ist the simplest example i could think of:

  • i created a simple cube
  • added text on top of it. The text is not embedded, but a bit elevated.
  • i colored the text in a different color then the cube (in my example black, the cube is white)
  • i sliced it
    this is the result:

What is happening here and how can i resolve that problem?

what exactly is wrong with it? To me it looks fine. The white dots are not being printed but they show the position of the seam, e g. where the perimeter starts and ends.

Some hints for smallish text:
I would enable slicing mode arachne instead of classic and also enable “detect thin walls”

I tried similar prints: Sadly i do have to report that they are IN FACT printed. Or left out entirely.
I will try out your tip though!

As mentioned before use Arachne for your Wall Generator this is especially relevant if you have a text size or a font that has too thin of a line for the Classic Wall Generator too function correctly and Classic + Thin Wall detect can sometimes even be worse.
However Arachne will not fix your issue, but what should fix it is a setting change that kind of seems unrelated to the issue:

Are you concerned with the “Seam” points showing? Seams are inherent to FDM printing, you won’t ever stop managing them. The slicer is showing you where they are being placed. You can toggle these things on and off in the preview tab after slicing

No, i want the white dots and streaks in the Text gone.
panamon did help me with my understanding: the text is simply to fine to print with my 0.4 nozzle, i scaled the text up and it basically is none existent anymore.
I will play around with it a bit and let you know how it looks :slight_smile:

I have a model I stopped to paint, trying to remove a brown dot coming from somehow I can’t paint even if I apply the sphere in that point. I just gave up.

If geometry consents, you can try to apply a black height range ?

So there is a natural cut off point, probably some multiplier of my nozzle size i guess?

Do take the preview with a grain of salt, it’s not 100% real life since it displays line ends square not rounded as would really be so if parts of your text has just a single line then it may look a little funky in the preview and/or show gaps

This may not be relevant to what you are actually doing but here goes…
One thing that confused me for a while in both text and in constructing an object from different parts was that I assumed if I had a, say, 5mm high part and I wanted a 2 layer 0.4 thick symbol part that I was adjusting the position to be entirely on top, then I thought the Z position of the upper part was 5.0, yet the position coordinates of an object are actually its midpoint so my 0.4 high extra had to be positioned at 5.2

That is then a real pain if you decide to change the Z size to say 0.6 because you want it more opaque then you also have to adjust the Z position as it now needs to be at Z=5.3 (5 plus half of 0.6).

Similarly if I want my 0.4 “icing” to be flush with the surface of a 5mm part I don’t put it at z=4.6 (5-0.4) I have to put it at Z=4.8 (5 minus half of 0.4)… Otherwise it’s actually submerged

It helps to understand what’s going on by stepping through the layers in the preview view (use up and down arrows to go 1 print layer at a time, and left right arrows to move through the print from start to finish of a layer)

What did the trick for me was scaling it up a bit, so it wasn’t as small anymore, and enabling “detect thin walls”.
