you don’t get to whine about “Good argument” while committing Argument From Authority by quoting RMS.
you could have also simply asked me to explain instead of being sarcastic.
Linux provides no support of any kind, and the quality of hardware compatibility comes with no guarantees. Windows comes with support. Support costs money. That’s their “excuse”
you’re free to use linux for your desktop if you want, as someone who has done it before all i can say is “have fun with that”.
Linux is definitely the superior option for a web server OS, but is actually inferior for things like clustering (no i really am not a fan of k8s). As a desktop OS linux is, and will forever remain, a joke. The only *nix that is a decent desktop OS is Mac OS/X (and i’m not personally a fan, but i can handle complimenting things i’m not a fan of)
Actually, multiple companies (like Red Hat, Canonical (Ubuntu), SUSE and bunch of other) are providing paid Linux support packages, complete with enterprise-grade hardware compatibility guarantees. These are used by businesses worldwide, so the idea that Linux has “no support of any kind” is just not true.
If you struggled with Linux as a desktop OS, that’s more about your experience than the system itself. Plenty of people run Linux desktops like Ubuntu, Fedora, or Linux Mint without issues. They’re stable, customizable, and free. It’s not everyone’s cup of tea, but it’s far from unusable.
but is actually inferior for things like clustering (no i really am not a fan of k8s)
Linux has been a powerhouse in high-performance computing (HPC) for quite some time and since 2017 is 100% the OS for top 500 supercomputers in the world (Operating system Family / Linux | TOP500) and kubernetes is container orchestration, not clustering.
As for the desktop, Linux isn’t a joke - it’s just not spoon-fed. Distributions like Ubuntu or Mint have polished interfaces that rival mainstream OSes in usability, plus you get security and flexibility for free. Calling it a “joke” ignores the millions who don’t share your struggle.
True, sarcasm doesn’t always move the needle… But neither does dismissing Linux with blanket statements or accusing people of “gross ignorance”
No amount of hardware based security modules will protect people from their own stupidity and the security given by TPM is not gonna help them in typical scenarios, where the weakest link is the carbon-based life form.
So - for the PCs that work perfectly fine but don’t have TPM2 - just slap nice Linux on them and it’ll be fine ![]()
Yeah, I thought that might come up. I didn’t want to be even more verbose by pointing out that it’s only an interesting observation, but I can see I should have. I used to think RMS was paranoid, but I was very wrong. My view has evolved on the matter and he is looking more prophetic than paranoid today.
So yes, I agree “RMS thinks this” isn’t a good argument on its own. But you’d only have a strong point here if it were my entire argument–which it’s not.
I tend to respond back with treatment and respect similar to how I was last treated. I think I respond well to constructive criticism? But being called “grossly ignorant” without even explaining why is effectively just an insult (or at worst, a troll). Your follow up was much better and I see it’s not a troll.
Being called grossly ignorant gets my attention because I’d rather be wrong, learn, and improve my viewpoint than try to defend a weak or stupid position. But first I need to be wrong, and then know why I was wrong! So it was disappointing to see nothing followed.
@Johnny_Bit Addressed the rest well, thanks!
–Written from my extremely fun but low quality Linux desktop which I’ve been using exclusively for all kinds of things from development to gaming for years! ![]()
Well, I won’t endorse all of his life choices… especially not that one photo.
But on this topic I’m liking his reasoning.
Yeah, no-one is completely right all of the time. And I think you are very much right about the perception of being paranoid, or perhaps “justified concern about trends”? Remember the quote “Just because you’re paranoid doesn’t mean they aren’t out to get you”?
On this topic though I think we’ll just have to agree to disagree though… ![]()
This discussion of the MS/Intel hegemony has been going on since the early 90s and will continue as long as both companies exist. Waste of ‘breath’ IMO since nothing has changed in the last three decades.
Maybe, but oh well. I guess some of us don’t want to go down without a fight.
MS is a bit more entrenched, but that’s more due to people/institution’s decisions. It used to be an actual, for real tech problem. Linux desktop truly was not cut out to replace much 20 years ago. But that, at least, has changed… it could definitely do the job for the vast majority of stuff today.
Intel… not sure. Some cracks in the dam perhaps? AMD is ROFLstomping the benchmarks I’ve seen (*I know, very expensive at the top) and ARM is trying to undermine them now too. No idea what the numbers that count (sales) look like.
I dunno about that… from something I was listening to the other week, sounds like Intel is on the verge of being cut up for parts?
Very true… Linux certainly isn’t going away anytime soon, and has been making some major strides in the last few years. Graphics driver support has been making some major advancements in just the last 12-18 months, Wayland has modernised a lot of the backend stuff, and then there is Steam, pushing Wine and Proton along in leaps and bounds. And with a lot of the “basic” computer usable all being online… 95% of the time is spend in the web browser now anyway… so really what does the OS matter. That is why Google’s ChromeOS Flex will be interesting to watch…
Well, I’d recommend reading again - I haven’t said anything about competence (or lack of it) ![]()
I don’t think that, however your assumption that I think that says a lot more ![]()
I’d like you to take your own advice:
someone went and cried to the hall monitor when called out. pathetic.
CHILDREN! Settle!
This is a discussion, not a soapbox for tantrums. If you can’t be civil, don’t talk at all… yada, yada…
Be happy they arent taking down every one of your posts. From where im standing, looks like theyre letting you get away with alot.
Not cut up. But seperated under the same roof. Basically created a foundry devision to help when china takes TSMC. This is the part people missed about the chips act. Intel is highly undervalued atm
Yeah, part of that was mentioned… was a round-table type discussion topic in a tech news podcast, and they were talking about Intel going the way of GE… and whether the new CEO would just be starting to sell Intel off for parts (as is usually the case when private equity firms get involved) was the crux of the discussion. Guess time will tell what actually happens… and whether the $8 billion plus was a good investment by the government or not (or just lining the pockets of investors/shareholders).
Geez, that doesn’t sound good. I’m not up to speed on Intel news at all. I’m more on the AMD team these days, but I do want competition. If this turns into ARM vs AMD and Intel turns into IBM… meh.
The company I really want to get a spanking (but not broken up into oblivion) is NVidia.

They just need to stop being evil and be more cooperative, like AMD.
