External spool feed issues

Hi All,

Printing from external spool while the AMS 2 and HT are busy drying.

I haven’t printed from the external spool before, and every few minutes, it seems the extruder can’t pull in the filament, so it pauses and asks to check if there’s a blockage. All I need to do is tell it it’s fixed and gently push the filament forward. I never sense any blockage or anything when I do so.

It’s Bambu PLA Basic, was dried at one point, but that was probably a month ago and it’s been in the open. Common issue? Could moisture be the problem? Or do you think these PTFE runs are suboptimal in some way? I have zero issues with either AMS.

The diameter of the bends in the PTFE entering the splitter and from splitter to the buffer both look pretty tight to me. Hand-feeding filament to the extruder on my own H2S I could feel noticeably more resistance with bends like that.

That PTFE bend might just be the angle of this photo, but it looks way way too sharp.

Can you instead feed it directly into either inlet above? Or move your external spool to the other side of the machine if you must plumb the PTFE that way

It’s a H2S so there is only one line to the head.

Cheers all. Let me see if I can reposition either the spool holder or the splitter in some way. I’ll report back. Thanks!

Well, whatta’ ya’ know…adjusted it mid-print to this, and have had zero…ha, right as I was typing this it stopped, but seems this was due to filament being legitimately stuck in side of spool, so not the same thing. Other than that - it looks like the below arrangement fixed it (while I may look to ease the radius a bit more on the inlet to the printer).

Now, I have to reconnect the AMS’s and if I want to keep the current splitter position which seems to be working well, I have to put in longer tubes to them by likely 8-12”. Is that going to create a new/different issue for me? Or since the AMS’s have feed motors themselves I should be fine?

If you put the coupler even closer to the yellow piece, then trim the ptfe going to the side spool holder until the ptfe stands upright, it will be even better for all uses. oh and last thing, flip the roll over so it feeds from the bottom of the spool. You also have your ams units on the wrong side of the printer. Amazing art incoming.

Thanks for the info, I’ll reposition the splitter. What do you mean, though, by I have my AMS units on the wrong side of the printer (they’re sitting on top?)? Not following…

I wasn’t sure. Based on the tubes, I was guessing they were on the right hand side.
