Extruder jam in filament sensor on first layers

I have three X1Cs and have never had this problem before. The issue is the filament jams in the filament sensor similar to heat creep. This has happened on long prints but this is happening on the first layer. I replaced the nozzle thinking there might be an issue with the hot end fan but that didn’t fix it.

When I clear the jam by removing the filament sensor and pulling the filament through, the last 3/8” of filament is a larger diameter than the hole in the sensor. The AMS is unable to pull the filament back through the sensor.

Is there something else I should be looking at?

What kind of filament?

Are you printing with the door open or closed?

You mention you replaced it but did you validate that the heat brake fan is spinning? The one for the nozzle not the one for the part. Should be on anytime the nozzle reads over 50c

Door closed. The printer is in the shop and the temperature is around 50F

The fan the is connected to the nozzle is spinning. The large one on the extruder assembly is as well.

You still didn’t say what kind of filament you’re using.

If it’s PLA, leave your printer door or the top lid open.

Yes, it’s PLA. I don’t think is heat creep since it’s happening on the first layer and it’s also not happening on my other 2 XC1 printers that are right next to each other. Could there be a sensor that modulates the hotend fan that isn’t working?

It’s not possible to make 1.75mm filament super wide unless it’s been heated above the glass transition temperature and then more filament is pushed into the space.

It’s heat creep.

Run the same print with the door open, you’ll see.

Well, I did that and there was no change. It’s still jamming.

To be honest I wasn’t expecting leaving the door to make a difference. This printer has over 6000 hours on it and it has only printed PLA and printing the same gcode. This is the first time it has jammed.

Is there anything else I can check?

Replace the fan on the hotend. Or just swap in a different hotend altogether.

You’re getting heat creep from something, that’s the only way you get this specific type of failure. If it isn’t due to an overall high temperature in the chamber, it’s due to insufficient cooling across the heatsink.

If it’s the hotend fan the printer will throw up a warning that it isnt spinning fast enough just been thru that.
