Extruder or filament settings

Hi.

I have been on the road of tuning new filament again and was playing with retraction, retraction speed and wipe distance.

I was wondering, if I have lets say wipe distance turned off, is it actually turned off or is bambu studio defaulting to the settings found in the machine page under “extruder”

How do I know if it is using those settings, or the filament settings? And how do I turn on/off one or the other?

Thanks!

Pick the one that fits what you meant. :+1: I wasn’t 100% sure without photos.

  • If you were referring to printer itself:

What matters is the file you send to the printer. The G-code. Often with the extension .3mf. This contains all the information about how the printer should behave and overwrites the settings in the printer for this print job.

Example: You select the Flow Dynamics Calibration option in Bambu Studio. Nothing happens yet, regardless of the settings in the printer or Bambu Studio. When you press Print, a G-code is created and sent to the printer saying: ‘Hey! Do a Flow Dynamics Calibration.’

Incidentally, this also applies to the filament.

Your G-code always takes priority, except for a few options in the printer. So no: Bambu Studio does not use values stored in the printer, but rather those specified in the project. However, what can happen, e.g., with the nozzle size: if this deviates, an error message will appear or a filament is not present at all.

  • If you were referring only to the different sections in Bambu Studio and not the printer itself:

“You can also set the retraction for a specific filament separately in the Filament Settings - Settings Overrides. If the parameter is not checked and modified on this page (the parameter box still shows gray or N/A), it will default to using the retraction setting in the Printer Settings.”

Described here with pictures:

I see I see. I was setting all my settings in the filament, but just tooling around in the settings I saw the same things under extruder.

It had me thinking hmm… if I set retraction to off is it actually still using retraction?

So if you have it checked but no value, it will use the extruder setting? But if you have it checked and your own value it will take that?

*side question. Once you have changed a value in the preset, is there a button push I can use to return it to default value? I’m not talking about the orang circle, i’m talking after you saved that new setting and the return circle with an arrow is gone.

If you make a preset change, you can reset it with the orange circle arrow only until the preset is saved. Once saved, the only way to see the original value would be to look at the original preset. Use the dropdown in the Edit window to toggle back and forth between presets.

If you only make a modification for the sake of a particular project, you do not need to save it as a preset. Saving the project will save the change and retain the orange reset circles.
