Extruding Issues after first few layers

My P1S is having some extruder issues. It starts to print the first few layers fine but then it stops extruding. What’s got me stumped is it starts fine and then plays up, could be within the first few layers or 100 layers in. No error messages are triggered, it just keens printing without extruding.

I have removed the extruder unit, pulled it apart, cleaned it. The extruder gears didn’t look too bad. I’ve also chucked on a new hot end assembly. Still no luck!

There could be several reasons why filament stops flowing. It would help if you shared what type of filament you’re using and what temperature you’re printing at.

Here are some things to check:

  1. Does this happen on all prints?
  2. Have you tried other filament types?
  3. Have you tried calibrating the temperature using a temp tower? Orca Slicer makes this easy with a built-in Calibration menu - temperature tower is the first option.
  4. What’s the internal ambient temperature of your chamber? If it’s too warm, you may be experiencing heat creep - where filament softens too early before reaching the nozzle and can back up inside the extruder causing a clog. This can result from insufficient cooling at the nozzle heatsink.
  5. Speaking of heat creep: can you hear the nozzle fan - not the part cooling fan - turning on? If not, check if the nozzle fan connector needs to be reseated.

Agree w/ heat creep as most likely culprit. When mine jams like that it never auto-catches itself, filament is in the nozzle and tubes, so all sensors are satisfied. Usually the filament freezes in the path, the gears wear a groove in the filament quickly, so even the extruder doesn’t notice overtorque, etc.

If this is PLA, try doing a print with your top glass OFF and door open, for a control. If this helps, consider printing a P1S top vented riser, there are many designs on makerworld that look good and accomplish the goal of letting hot air freely exit.

I have done some tests. Can confirm the fan is on, also added a vented riser, still had trouble.

So I just tried loading a new roll of as suggested and it printed without any concerns… I was running with a cheap budget PLA for some prototyping, wondering if it’s as easy as that?? Will keep an eye on it and see if that’s all it was.
