Extrusion motor is overloaded

After a session of printing PETG HF, I encountered serious problems with extrusion motor overload errors. Two of my prints stopped at exactly 75% completion, after about an hour of printing. At first, I tried cold pulls to clean the nozzle and even swapped to a new nozzle, but the situation only got worse.

To test whether the extruder gear was the issue, I attempted a print using a different nozzle—the left one connected to an external spool. Although there was a strange clicking sound, it managed to complete the prints without any problems, and I successfully printed two Benchy models.

This made me think the problem might not to be related with extrusion gear. However, when I switched back to the right nozzle with AMS filament, the same error occurred after just two layers. I’m really confused. If I can print fine with the left nozzle, could the filament be getting stuck somewhere in the right cutter or extruder path?

I plan to post a video of the printing process with the left nozzle so maybe someone can help identify the source of the clicking sound. I have a few theories but would appreciate some assistance.

Before all this, I want to ask if there is a known major issue with PETG HF filament and the H2D printer, since it’s currently unavailable in stores. I’ve heard rumors but nothing confirmed.

Okay, if I can print successfully with the left nozzle but not with the right one, does that mean the extruder gear is still a possible cause? Could the filament be getting stuck in the right cutter? I should note that I haven’t disassembled the extruder yet because I’m hesitant to tamper with new equipment.

There is also another potential culprit—the filament buffer—as some users have reported issues with it early on.Another one would PTFE tubes on H2D were too short.

What should I try next? And what could be causing that clicking sound during extrusion?

If you start experiencing strange issues, check the dual filament guide. It’s prone to collecting debris, which can prevent it from cutting filaments properly. Over time, this can result in leftover filament getting stuck inside the PTFE tubes.

I just checked my spare filament guide — the black substance you see appears to be some kind of adhesive, likely silicone-based.
However, I did notice some small debris inside. Make sure to clean that out thoroughly and check that the guide moves smoothly up and down.
While you have it disassembled, it’s also a good idea to inspect the cutters and ensure they’re still sharp enough.

I’ve got a brand new H2D that has never been used, and won’t be until I get this problem resolved. Right out of the box it gave me the “Extrusion motor is overloaded” error. I can manually push filament through with no problem, and the filament loads and unloads fine from the AMS. However, it won’t even start printing. Just pops up that error immediately after I start a print. I’ve even removed the nozzle and tried just manually running it through, using the AI. It pushes a little bit, clicks, and then pulls it back, so it never actually gets anywhere. Meanwhile, I can push filament through manually with the nozzle installed or removed. I’m thinking it’s got to be a problem with either the extruder motor or gear. It does make a clicking sound while it’s trying to extrude.

my filament guide has tons of lube there, instead of glue, but it’s very sticky thick lube. If yours is sort of lube then that’s mormal

I had this same problem. I’m not a technical guy but a designer. I thought about this problem and found a workaround. What seems to be my problem is that Petg HF and CF is brittle, so I looked at the back of the AMS and noticed that the AMS cord or tube is a little long and it sometimes loops at the back. My guess is this does not affect softer materials but when printing models with Petg I think it’s to hard to pull the Petg through the tube, it get’s to hard in some prints. I moved the AMS down to the table besides the H2D and maked sure the tubes where straight. Now everything works. My conclusion is that if you want to print with stiff materials shorten the tubes to keep them straight when using the AMS on top of the H2D, or move it to the side of the H2D and keep the tubes straight with few to zero bends or loops.

petg is NOT brittle, if it’s brittle then something is really wrong with either your storage or filament path

I’m having constant extruder overloaded messages as well on two of my H2D printers. Previously they were both fine but then on the same day are experiencing this issue.

One is currently printing away fine, the other I’ve swapped from TPU to PETG and it gets the same message on the other nozzle. I’ve dismantled the head to check for any stuck filament but the pathway seems clear.

Not sure if it’s an issue with the H2D but thought I’d leave a message here to add to the convo in case it becomes a common issue with these printers.

Next up, I’m going to try dismantling again and checking everything over again just in case I missed something.

this night I printed another scraper with left nozzle and 0.2, no issues.

right nozzle gives me same error, with standard PLA, matte PLA (jayo green olive matte, pretty rough at touch) and even PETG HF matte.

I rally don’t know why. I had let the printer carry on and in the past she just finished the print.

Now I notice the purged filmant of right nozzle doesnt come out perfectly vertical, but I have still to diagnose if it is the fan blowig on it or the nozzle is defective. I will try to swap L-R nozzle as soon I can.

The error was given at RN filament change, usually.

I was using PETG carbon fiber (PETG-CF) filament, that can be brittle, especially compared to regular PETG. The added carbon fibers increase stiffness but also make the printed parts more prone to breaking or shattering under stress. This brittleness can be exacerbated by issues like poor layer bonding or moisture in the filament.

After you do the cleaning, perform a factory reset and then calibrate. My problems were solved afterward. Oh, and as Rave mentioned, there might be an issue with the tube angle or dimensions when printing some materials. It’s hard to say for sure because there could be many factors involved.Need more testing.

PETG-CF though it’s more brittle than PETG, it’s still considered as rather flexible, compatible and works fairly well with Bambu printers and AMS units. I have longer tube path than most others but I had 0 issues with PETG-CF. Unless it’s wet. So if your PETG-CF gives you motor extrusion errors or is brittle, check your ptfe tube path, and dry the filament.

I have a H2D since a few weeks and when using left Nozzle with PLA, it keeps giving “extruder motor overload” issues. But not on the right one. I already deinstalled the ams but did not help. Is there a solution to this already?
