Failed mid print, how to fix? Help!

I’m using a P1S with AMS, with PLA on default settings. Doing a two color print. At a filament switch it threw and error and stopped, saying it could not pull the filament from the head. It will allow me to continue once I’ve fixed the problem.

However, the head is set at 42C, so of course the filament is frozen in it. I figured I might be able to pull the filament manually, but it will not let me change the head temperature. How can I fix the problem if it won’t let me heat up the head?

I also tried using the Unload option, thinking it might heat the head. No luck.

Nope. It didn’t break anywhere in the path. It is still attached to the reel, and I can see it in the PTFE tubing all the way to the head. I would think that if I can heat the head, and use the Unload command, I could pull on it at the AMS and get it to come out. But it doesn’t allow me to heat the head or use the Unload.

Does this mean I have to abandon a 15 hour print to fix this?

You could try and cut the filament yourself by squeezing the cutter lever and plling out the filament that way. Hopefully it will let you purge all the material out after that and you can continue.

Sounds like that might be the only option. I’ll give that a try.

No luck. Apparently the filament was already cut anyway because it was trying to retract it. It looks like it’s stuck in the extruder. Possible heat creep - I had the top open, but not the door. Anyway, I made one last ditch effort. I tried to slowly heat the extruder up with a heat gun while pulling at the AMS. No luck there either. Guess I’ll have to cancel the print and disassemble the extruder. Thanks for the suggestions.

Well, it wasn’t in the extruder. In fact, I’m not quite sure what it was.

I started by pulling the PTFE out of the extruder, and the filament came with it! Slid right out. But no matter how hard I pulled at the AMS, it would not retract.

So I started working my way back to the AMS, removing pieces of PTFE and sliding the filament out. Got all the way back to the AMS outlet and everything was fine, but still could not pull the filament out of the filament inlet.

So I took the AMS apart and everything looked good in there too. But then I found that if I pulled hard enough, I could get the filament to come back out the inlet. There’s an assembly with a motor and gears where the 4 inlet tubes merge under the AMS. I’m assuming that has a good grip on the filament so it can feed it in and out.

Overall, everything looked pretty good. There was one piece of PTFE that showed some wear so I replaced it, but the filament was still sliding through it easily so I don’t think that was the issue. I took this opportunity to disassemble the extruder and clean and lubricate it, but it was surprisingly clean after 700 hours of use.

I put everything back together, and it seems to work fine, feeding the filaments in and retracting them without any problems. So I really have no idea what the problem was.
