Feature Request: Simplify and Correct Default Behavior for Exhaust Fan
Summary: The current default settings for the exhaust fan, a key advertised safety feature, are confusing and counter-intuitive for new users. The feature is inactive by default and requires navigating multiple obscure settings and creating custom profiles to enable it, which is a major point of frustration and a safety risk.
Core Issues:
-
Counter-Intuitive Master Switch: The “Exhaust Fan Speed” setting is hidden by a master switch called “Air filtration enhancement” that is off by default in the
Printersettings. A new user logically looks for fan controls under theFilamentorCoolingtabs and will not find them. -
Safety Feature is Not Functional Out-of-the-Box: This design means that for the most toxic filaments (like ABS and ASA), the printer’s advertised safety feature is not active by default. The user must manually enable it, a process many will not discover.
-
Multilayered Complexity: Even if the master switch is enabled, the filament profiles have the fan set to 0% to maintain a hot chamber. This forces the user to make two changes and create custom profiles to use the fan for either PLA cooling or post-print fume extraction for ABS.
-
Manual Control is Useless: When a user attempts to override the setting by manually turning on the fan from the printer’s screen, the G-code from the slicer overrides this command and turns the fan back off, particularly during multi-color prints.
Proposed Solution:
Enable the “Air filtration enhancement” by default in the stock printer profiles. This would make the exhaust fan settings available in the filament profiles, where a user would logically expect to find them.
This change would:
- Make the advertised safety feature of the exhaust fan functional by default.
- Simplify the user experience by reducing the number of steps required to use the feature.
- Allow new users to better manage issues like PLA heat creep and toxic fumes without having to navigate to advanced settings or create custom profiles.
