Feature request: Option "no filament change" if next print uses same filament

I think that should and must have been asked for very often, but i can’t find that request:

Very often i have to print different jobs with the same filament - then every time a lot of filament ist wasted (and some time too) in an unnecessary purge.

Can we please get an option (button?) “filament change not needed” or something like that??
I do not like to fiddle with the G-Code…

If that option already exists somewhere in the menu, then sorry for my blindness… and please enlighten me

It currently doesn’t exist in the user settings.

Out of curiosity, what printer do you have?

Also, feature-request

Sort of like TPU, don’t unload when finished printing. I can see that as a feature in Studio. If you run batch jobs, that will save a bit of time, but you would also need to disable all the calibration before print to make good use of it. If I am printing 10 batches of ducks and only using black and yellow in ,my H2D, no sense in it cutting, retracting both filaments only to reload and purge the nozzles when it can go right into starting the same print when the bed is cleaned of the previous one. Kind of putting the printer into a standby/keep warm setting, and repeat.

Use the external spool holder. You don’t have to use the AMS just because you have one.

My printer is a P2S (+AMS). Even when using the external spool holder and with filament fully loaded it always demands pulling the filament and (no matter if i pull or just press “continue”) purges a lot of filament.
BTW: If i don’t pull when requested sometimes it tries to load filament from the AMS (usually from slot 4), though it shows correctly that filament from the external spool is fully loaded.
Maybe the filament handling in Studio needs a bit overhaul, or is it just my machine, or am i too thick?

Edit: I want to emphasize that the P2S is still a terrific machine - the prints usually come out in near perfect quality (at least if i have designed the parts correctly).

I’m curious to understand, what is wasted? The cut end still inside the nozzle?
Wouldn’t that (or most of it) need to be flushed anyway before the next print?

BTW, one can see the volume of filament between the cutter and nozzle tip in each printer’s Extruder → Nozzle volume settings in Studio. 110 mm³ for P2S (45.73mm length of 1.75mm filament). I’m not really sure how much of that would need to be flushed anyway, from below the heatbreak or whatnot… maybe half that at least?

Exactly that’s the point: No, if i use the same filament, there is no need to flush that.

Even the stuff that’s been sitting and baking below the heatbreak?
My understanding has been that this bit shouldn’t really be used, but I guess that’s not a hard rule?

Thanks,
-Max

What printer are you using?

There’s a way to do this on Bambu printers already, it just isn’t a button in the slicer.

:pink_heart::brown_heart: It’s a P2S with AMS. Thanks.

A brim will deal with that if needed. But usually the nozzle is pretty clean. :slightly_smiling_face:

Yes, it is. Why? Because a series of steps is running in the background that you can’t see, checking whether your printer is ready to go.

The printer doesn’t know what has happened in the meantime or that you are a conscientious person. It must always assume the worst-case scenario and check its own safety and functionality before printing.

This is not a waste, but a verification of functionality.

Furthermore, your printer doesn’t check how long it has been idle, whether that’s 5 minutes, a day or even weeks. The printer has no way of knowing the condition of the remaining filament. Since water vapour is produced in the nozzle, albeit in very tiny small amounts, the filament in the nozzle may have spoiled.

As you can see, there’s a whole science behind it to ensure that you get the best results. That’s why it’s set up that way.

Yes i can understand that. That’s why i would like it as an option (maybe with a warning: “you really want to skip that?”), not a total all-time annihilation of flushs.

-Tom

I’m guessing - I haven’t tested this - but you could try changing that in the G-code. Not in the project itself, but under “Printer Settings,” where you can remove that line. But be warned: I have no idea how the printer will react after that.

I don’t think Bambu would include that as a switch, since it would lead to too many printing errors.

I do it from time to time on my X1C - it works well when I’m doing big runs of parts.

If I happen to leave it enabled and then my next print is a different filament, it’s no big deal, the printer sees the wrong one is loaded and does a standard unload and then loads the right one.

The difference is: It forces you to actively go to the printer instead of sending a command over the network, while the printer may be in another room. If I understand you correctly…

…or did you mean G-code adjustments?

Sorry, I wasn’t being very clear.

I do it by modifying the printer G-code scripts.

Ah i see. I am still pretty low down on the learning curve and have not yet mustered enough courage to fiddle with the G-code. That’s why i would like a button
Learning all that CAD-stuff (i use Fusion) is hard enough for now.

Maybe one day someone might point me to the right starting place for changing G-code… but not yet.

Thanks for all your input!

What printer are you using?

I am using a P2S and i am pretty happy with it.
