Please change the updating system to be in-app and not by downloading a new installer. Every time there’s an update I have to unpin Bambu Studio from the taskbar since it’s technically a new program and re-pin the new version. Also, every time it asks to associate all files with Studio and every time everything is preselected, which I don’t want. This would all be fixed with a better update system.
This behavior may depend on your operating system.
I do not need to do this using Windows. Using the .exe installer, new versions install in the same location as the old version and use the same pinned shortcut. The “portable” .zip version also can be extracted into the old folder, overwriting the old files. Again, the shortcut still works.
i use windows as well. the desktop shortcut might work, i don’t know i don’t use a desktop shortcut. but the taskbar doesn’t work. i always have to unpin it and re-pin it. the issue is that it’s technically reinstalling every new version instead of internally updating like discord or steam. because of that, it has an install wizard every time and every time it asks to associate all 4 file types with bambu studio even though every time i deselect everything except 3mf. changing it to update internally would make the update process much smoother
I do not know why you having this problem with the updates.
The pinned taskbar icon is a shortcut, just like a desktop shortcut. I never need to change it after a program update.
The installers with the .exe extension from the Bambu website and also Github always put the program in the same place with the same name, so any shortcuts should point to C:\Program Files\Bambu Studio\bambu-studio.exe regardless of the version.
If you are using the “portable” .zip version from Github the files will be extracted to the folder of your choice. If you are using a different folder for each update you do need to update the shortcut to match. If I am trying out a beta version I always put the portable files in D:\Studio_Beta, letting them overwrite the previous beta. The shortcut then does not need to be changed to launch D:\Studio_Beta\bambu-studio.exe.
Studio’s habit of re-associating files is a Bambu choice. OrcaSlicer avoids that nuisance and does not change the associations without user input.
