So no real surprise that spools made of thick pulp fiber will degrade.
How long does that process take?
What is the state of the spool when it hits empty. How much fiber is in the bottom of the AMS and what condition are the two sides in?
Is it hard to keep up with the fiber generation of a single spool? My working assumption is that the spool is in not too terrible shape by the time you use all the filament and spool gets tossed in any case.
Also, I would think the AMS can rotate a fiber spool with no significant friction troubles compared to a plastic spool.
Or is it really a housekeeping issue. Fiber spools generate dust/fiber at a fair clip while plastic spools have almost no shedding?
Not correct. 
The fiber board sheds fast enough, youâll be hard pressed to get halfway through a spool before it starts to slip in the AMS. It takes very little âfluffâ on those rubber rollers before they canât bite anymore.

I ordered a whole bunch of filament at a too good to be true price.
The filament was great but it came on those cardboard spools.
Was just able to fit them into the AMS but the problem was that they kept slipping.
Not just that, they also produced a lot of cardboard dust in the process.
Bought some dirt cheap âthinâ (said so on the tube) silicone sealant from the 2$ shopâŚ
Thin turned out to be rather runny but despite that working as advertised.
Smeared a thin layer around the running faces of the cardboard spool and rubbed it so the cardboard would turn a shade darker.
While that worked I really did not like the vinegar smell for a few days lingering around before I could dare putting them into the AMS.
Turned out there is an even cheaper and simpler way to fix up cardboard spoolsâŚ
If you just run them empty with no intention of using them again apply just on the running faces and around it, like with the silicone.
Otherwise, for a good quality cardboard spool, if there is such a thing, brush onto the entire roll once empty.
