Bambu Sudio v 2.5.0.66
I have brought a simple test model in from Fusion and I am unable to change which filament spool it will be printed in. In the Prepare tab Objects it clearly shows the colour as being spool #3 (red PETG), but the model doesn’t reflect the change:
Note that the grey is not one of my installed spools. If I click OK on this dialogue, it then adds the Grey PETG to my list of spools (as seen in the previous screenshots) and it is not possible to change the colour - although it does change in the objects list (also shown in previous screenshot), but it is ignored when I slice it.
I have found that if you delete the grey PETG spool from the list of installed spools then it will immediately change to the colour that you had previously set it to, and you can now change the spool as normal.
Note that if you click on “Cancel” in the “Standard 3mf import color” dialogue then everything works as it used to. If you click “OK” then you can no longer change the colour unless you remove the newly added spool first.
I am a software developer myself and I would consider that a bug.
…and thanks MalcTheOracle, I hadn’t noticed the paint bucket icon - and I wasn’t looking for it because I hadn’t painted anything. It appears that if you click ‘OK’ on the import dialogue, the model is automatically painted with the new colour. If you erase the painting then you can also change which spool it can be printed with. Weird.
I’ve been using Fusion and BS for 18 months now, pretty much daily, and this really tripped me up.
A new Grey filament will appear in your available spools
If you look at the newly imported Objects, you’ll see that the model has been painted.
You cannot change the colour of the model until you have either
Deleted the newly added spool (the grey one)
or deleted the painting.
I am pretty familiar with BS and I didn’t notice that it had been painted because why would I - nothing had been painted (once again, thanks MalcTheOracle for noticing the icon). I don’t understand why it would be painted instead of just assigning it the number of the automatically created spool. If they done that, then you’d still easily be able to change the colour by entering the appropriate spool number - as you would normally do if you’re changing the colour.
I am not seeing the clue that it has been painted. What am I missing? I am sure it is something simple.
It may not be a bug. The piece to keep in mind is order of operations. Meaning painting over rides part color. I don’t use Fusion for CAD. Will need to test more with version 2.5. what file format did you save from fusion? could be the surface color is transferred as painting in BS.
It would be interesting to know what other factors go into print color. It might have worked one way when I tested it. And newer version has updated. That is why I am active on the forum, to find the better way than I currently use.
That is how studio saves the data for a project , in my examples neither the printer or Ams are switched on ,the colours listed are project colours ,exception being blue
If you are exporting from Fusion, and you have a single body, you should export as a STEP file, not an STL or 3MF. I’m fairly certain that if you do this, you won’t get the same dialog.
For multiple bodies where you want to retain their relationship when importing, you can convert your bodies to meshes in Fusion, then export the whole thing as 3MF.
There is an option in Fusion in the file menu called “3D Print”, which exports the .3mf model with all of the relationships in place, this is what I have always used. The new addition to BS is that it also accepts the colours assigned in Fusion and tries to match them. This makes it a whole lot simpler as I can get the colours that I have already set in Fusion. It also means that I don’t need to export the STEP file from Fusion, open Bambu, and then open the file - I just click “3D Print” and Bambu starts up with the file already imported.
The problem is that it paints the objects rather than just assigning them to a colour, and unless you know what to look for it’s impossible to change any colours in BS.
RobertWest I don’t know how you get to the screen shot above. Can you point the gray to the filament you want? picking the 4 and pointing it to the intened
I use the “"3D Print” option in Fusion rather than manually exporting the file. If you use that option it will create a 3mf file with all of the relationships in place. I make fairly complex models often with 20+ components, so it’s important to keep their relationships in place - especially when you have print-in-place hinges etc. The new ability to also transfer colours would be amazing, its the implimentation that I don’t think works logically.
I’ve tried everything I can think of, but I don’t ever see the “Standard 3mf import dialog”.
Bambu Studio 2.5.0.66 either says the file isn’t a Bambu Studio file and only imports the geometry, or it just opens the file like normal. This is by clicking the “Add” button (first on toolbar) or using File→Open.
RobertWest notice the difference between the gray from Fusion and the Gray from AMS (filament 2). I am guessing that is where the mapping has a problem. Try using the same color maybe in Fusion, Maybe in AMS
