Filament Extruder Anomaly

Running a P2S and have a new issue that searching on didn’t bring up.

Printing in PETG. (Yes it’s dried.) 3 sides of 2 different plates. Additionally, I rewashed one of them with no positive effect. I think this is the same issue I was having with PLA over the last 2 days, but I wasn’t watching close enough. However, the buildup and lifting of is similar to what I am seeing today.

All of the normal procedures happen. Filament change, flow calibration, wipes, nozzle cleaning, leveling all work and appear to have proper visual flow rates. However, when it gets ready to print the purge line / calibration line that prints on the front of the plate, there is a weird clicking for 2 or 3 clicks from the machine (think extruder) and the calibration line is not laid down properly. Sometimes it stays and sometimes it is picked up by the nozzle. The printer briefly shows a “Filament Extruder Anomaly”. As that message goes away, it goes to the purge area and runs another purge. However, it does NOT WIPE the nozzle through the pad, so there is a bit of extra filament that still remains. It then goes directly to printing the part. As it does this, the very first contact either has a bit of cold filament or builds up in a clump before sticking to the plate at the start point. It lays down the first layer just fine, except for this point. However, at layer 2, this interferes and can cause that part of the print to be pulled up (small parts or supports) or grind against the extra filament. If it makes it through this point, the rest of the prints come out fine. Never a Filament Extruder Anomaly again. No under extrusion or indications of any other issues.

I know correlation is not causation, but it seems to have occurred NEAR the time that the Studio 2.6.1.55 release.

Wondering if anyone else has seen this specific behavior?

I can try going back in time to an earlier studio release and see if this makes a difference.

I did not change nozzles or do a cold pull. I can try that, but I have 4 hours left on this print that I finally got started.

What else can I check, do, or debug?

check temperature reading on the nozze… look for abrupt temp drops or rise and stuff like that.

excluding you tampering with gcodes right ?

I’ve never changed GCode. Print has little more than an hour on it left. Haven’t been any issues. Google just says to power cycle the printer. I didn’t do that either. Not much other info I can find, other than the extruder overload mega thread, but I think this is different.

Does it do that everytime? Some thing maybe stuck inside it, causing it to jam, but I have no clue.

My printer is in my home office for the days I am able to work from home. This is how I saw this initial behavior. During a meeting, I was told there was too much background noise. I paused the printer and resumed it after the meeting. It did the same thing as the start of the print when the nozzle warmed up and purged. That error message is shown below. It really does disappear quite quickly from the screen.

Since it did it again, it appears to be only when the printer attempts to start. This PETG is coming in from a AMS HT. Yesterday the possible issue with the PLA was from the AMS2 Pro. Just to make sure, I rolled the spool in the HT and made sure it was free. I also double checked the filament to make sure there was no tangle or any reason it couldn’t come off freely.

Think the next steps are to see if does it with PLA while I am present. Maybe a different roll of PETG, too. Then possibly nozzle related items. (Change or cold pull.) Weird that my print would be fine during the actual print. I don’t know that I want to disassemble the extruder, but that might be something to do, too. Was just really hoping that someone had seen something similar to help point it a direction…

I think it is because I had a PEBKAC / 1D10T error. I got out the thermal camera, took off the sock, and was getting ready to manually heat up the hotend and measure it. And then saw this:

Also explains why it was multiple filament types from two different AMSs. The nozzle was the common error point.

Additional confirmation that this is solved. I restarted a new copy of the previous print and had no issues.
