My X1C Combo arrived yesterday, when I put the partial roll of green filament that came with it in the AMS and loaded it a little came off the spool and the the AMS tried to drag the spool out of the AMS. The filament was imbedded down into the roll. Pulled it out and haven’t had any more issues printing with it.

Yeah, I’ve gotten a roll or two that looks like it is rolled well until you actually feed some in and you quickly find the kink or pinch spot. First time it happened to me in the way you described, scared the heck out of me. 
I will see that on refills, load it up and 1 out of 3 will roll off the side in between the filament and spool. Then it pulls tight and errors out. I just pull it loose by hand and let it go again.

I got a refund from Amazon for a Creality Hyper spool I was trying because it jammed up 4 times. I’d pull on the filament until it was free and 3-4 layers on the spool later, it was jammed down the side again. Threw away 4 attempted prints because of the issue. Bice that I was able to get my money back.
