Filament Setting Overrides values - unclear

In Bambu Studio, in the Filament settings dialog, there is a section for Setting Overrides, and they are all disabled, with a greyed out “N/A” as a value. When I click on a parameter to enable it, a value is populated into the setting field.

My question is: is that the default value? Or is it just a suggested starting point? In other words, if I check the checkbox to enable a setting, and I don’t change the shown value, is that the same value that is used when the checkbox is not checked?

I’ve had this same question for a while. Now that I am getting more into tweaking stuff and also using Cura with my Bambu P1S…I need to start figuring this out. I’m guessing those are default values which you don’t get to see until you override. Seems like a weird way to set it up though.

The values that show up if you checkmark them in the settings override are some basic values HOWEVER they are not necessarily the actual values that are currently used for that filament. Example if you have loaded the generic PLA filament profile and slice your object you will see in the Line type color scheme that there are filament retractions, wipe actions,…etc. and if you look at the G-Code you will see the filament retraction is a certain value, e.g. with my P1S 0.4 Nozzle it is set as 0.4mm retraction and there is also wipe action however if you check the retraction value in the settings override of that preset or a copy thereof it will populate it with a 0.8mm retraction value and wipe will not be active.

Good point. I need to learn my way around the G-code to see what exactly is going on. Even just going from Bambu Studio to Cura is forcing me pay attention better to all the possible settings and values. I wouldn’t be messing with Cura except that I’m printing files for single wall objects… the files are modeled using surfaces. Thus causing problems for Bambu.

I’ve done some more looking into this. It appears that the default values come from the printer/nozzle profile. When you bring up the filament profile and use the setting overrides, I think it pulls those values from the printer/nozzle profile and shows them in the filament overrides. So in the filament profile, you can override the printer/nozzle settings for that one filament.

I will have to make a correction to my above post, the 0.4mm retraction in the G-Code I mentioned in my above reply was for a 0.2mm Nozzle and not the standard 0.4mm Nozzle on the project I checked this on and the 0.4mm Nozzle would have the 0.8mm retraction and also looked at 0.6mm Nozzle → 1.4mm retraction as well as 0.8mm Nozzle → 3.0mm retraction in the G-code however on all of them it will populate the override value with a baseline 0.8mm retraction.
So yes the actually used values in the sliced G-Code will be in relation to the Nozzle and so it should be however the filament settings override value that gets automatically populated is just a base value without that correlation

You are correct. The filament override value just happened to match the printer profile value so I thought it was pulled from there. But I tried a different printer profile with a different retraction value and the filament override default stayed the same at 0.8mm. So as you say, it’s just a default value, unrelated to the printer profile.

So… how do I know if bambu studio is using the settings I put on the filament, or the settings under the machine extruder menu?

If I disable something is it going to default to the extruder? Or is it going to use what I have set in the filament.

I thought at one points I saw a button that said “override filament settings” or something along those lines.

Makes it tough to tune retraction, speed and wipe when the machine may be putting its own on when turned off.
