Filament stuck in Extruder, PTFE tube not removable

Dear community,

I am desperate to solve my stuck filament issue.

I have disassembled the extruder, removed the spring but cannot get the filament out. The yellow gear is moving but I cant get the PTFE tube removed. Trying to load or unload filament did not work, gears where just “clicking”

Pulling the gear out does not work, either.

Quick question: when removing the PTFE tube, are you pressing the coupler’s release ring and first pushing the tube slightly inward before pulling it out? The coupler has internal teeth that grip the tube; you need to disengage them by pushing the tube in while holding the release ring, then pull the tube straight out.

All right thanks that solved it! I had to pull the filament out by force but it worked! Does everything look normal? Will do some cleaning now. Filament looked Like that.

Looks normal for a jam that was pulled out. The filament tip shows hob-gear bite marks, and the drive gear has plastic dust—both consistent with a brief stall.

Most likely causes: a partial nozzle clog or a rough cut from the toolhead cutter catching on retraction.

Quick steps:

  • Clean the hob gears (dry brush/compressed air; no lube).
  • Test the cutter—make a manual cut; reseat/tighten if it isn’t clean and square.
  • Hot-clean the nozzle: heat to print temp, extrude 30–50 mm; if it clicks/under-extrudes, clear with a 0.3 mm needle or swap the nozzle and purge.
  • Check the PTFE path for shavings/kinks.

If any part isn’t clean and intact, replace it:

  • Cutter blade: chipped/bent/dull → replace.
  • Nozzle: still under-extrudes or tip damaged → replace.
  • PTFE: scarred/ovaled → replace.
  • Hob gear: worn/pitted teeth → replace; if just dusty, clean.

I started a print, but in the middle of the print of the first layer it stopped extruding. Again IT failed to pull back the filament. I am using anycubic A glow in the dark PLA Filament at 205C.

Update will replace the PTFE now… Filament broke off unfortunately.

You’re running into a classic glow-PLA issue. The phosphorescent filler (strontium aluminate) raises friction in PTFE and increases back-pressure, so 205 °C is often too low.

Free the stuck PTFE

  • Heat the hotend to ~230 °C (PLA).
  • Cut the filament flush at the inlet.
  • Press the collet, push the tube in 2–3 mm to release the teeth, then pull it straight out.
  • If it’s still stuck, unscrew the coupler; trim 3–5 mm off the tube (square cut, slight chamfer). Replace the tube if it’s scarred/ovaled.

Prevent repeat

  • Run hotter (215–225 °C), slow the first layer, and reduce retractions.
  • Dry the filament (45–50 °C for a few hours).
  • Prefer a 0.6 mm hardened nozzle for glow materials; they’re abrasive.
  • Keep PTFE runs short with gentle bends; try a direct-feed test (bypass AMS) to confirm it’s material friction.
  • Clean the hob gears and make sure the cutter leaves a clean, square tip.

If extrusion still drops after this, treat it as a partial clog—clear or replace the nozzle.

Super helpful comments! Will need to get myself a .6 nozzle first. Extruding with the .4 ist back to normal, will avoid luminescent PLA for noe.

Make sure the nozzle you purchase is a hardened nozzle. Easy to do on the BL store as I think that’s all that’s offered. If purchasing elsewhere (AliExpress etc) the 3rd party nozzles are not always hardened. Glow will wear a nozzle.
