Filter not working

I don’t get why the filters don’t work on Maker World.
What I mean is if you select tools/hand tools. Most of the items shown don’t fit that category. It is basically the same for all the categories. Yes there is a higher of the selected category.
Is it that people are selecting different than I would chose?
Is it that MW is filling the category?

I think maker world needs to fix this!

The designer chooses the category.

MakerWorld will not fix the existing problem proactively as they just don’t do that, ever.

There are not many categories and the ones that exist are not a great selection. They read as a “we think these will do for day one and we will come back and fix it later”, yet they didn’t.

More categories with better names would be a welcome improvement.

That followed by a push to have each designer revisit the models they believe they were forced to miscategorise and choose a better match.

I agree with those “reasons” for the way it is.
I thought you could only put things in one category. If that is true. I am seeing the same thing in multiple cats.
That is pointing to some issue in MW mixing thing up.

There is only one category you can “put” a model in.

You can add lots of tags to each model though. I wonder if this is what you are thinking of, or at least how it is presented.

For example those are all tags and not categories.

Those are often abused. A tag is entirely made up by the designer if they wish.

BL did make some changes previously to prioritise searches results so tags that matched the model name and description were higher than those that didn’t, but it is still possible to abuse that.

If you look at mis categized models. they show as being in that Cat.
Keywords are a different issue. that would be much harder to regulate.
But choosing one category, would be different. Very complicated to automate the regulation.
Not that hard for a person. But an AI would have a hard time recognizing the use of a creative design. Is that a cosplay thor’s hammer or a functional tool.
I suspect the reason for the mis categorized is from an auto fill system that copies the last use of the form. Just a wild guess, unsupported.

Having uploaded over 800 models I can assure you this is not true.

Malc’s saying the categories are very narrow.
My figure stands for instance. There’s no category for action figures, just figures. There’s also no category for stands. Do I put them in figures, do I put them in other toys?
Like Malc said, there’s not a mistake. The user picks their category, it’s a drop down and can’t be influenced by autocorrect.

No category for fidget spinners or even fidget toys as a whole either.

They are put in “Other Toys”.

Anything for the home has to be put in “decor”.

I randomly ask one of the models for tools/gadget why that cat.
and the answer was in a different language, and said it was a gadget.
I understand that explanation, But I would not call it a tool/gadget.
this random explanation does bring up a complication. Multiple languages. Different meanings of words, and understanding gets very complicated.

I would expect inconsistent categories like you describe. The correct answer is put it in the category that has the most like yours. So people who are looking for yours are more likely to find it.
The probem is with so many putting it in the wrong cat, it is hard to recognize pattern.
without some enforcement it is as if there is no “pattern” or correct.

Who’s going to enforce it and how? Thanks for pointing out the correct answer, I needed that to figure it out.

You would have to have an algorithm set up to determine what exactly a print is by code, then know where to put it if it doesn’t fall under the generic categories.

Bambu can’t tell what a print is by picture let alone figure it out with AI.

There are so many points of view for categorization. then you combine the different language problem. it is a problem. now that it is a mess I don’t see how the egg could be unscrambled.

I think the best place to put your model is with other similar. So searching can find.

some algorithm or AI would be very problematic, and get many wrong. But would be a drastic improvement. Even if the designer could override it without approval.

You appyto now believe it is humans causing the issue rather than the filter as I pointed out at the start.

I don’t know what you mean?
It appears to me that the filter is showing the category.
(A little different than my first post. With a little more looking around. Referring to “multi category” appears to not exist)

@JonRaymond can we get a “?” just for me?

My point is, your original belief was that filters were not working and there is a possibility people could enter a single model into more than one category.

  1. I have explained that it is humans, the one uploading the model that controls which category they choose to assign it to.
  2. Thusly, filters are simply returning what was denoted by the designer.
  3. There is only one category any model can be assigned into.
  4. Having a computer guess what the model is and which category it really belongs to is not possible.

While I do enjoy pointing out areas BL needs to fix, this is not one.

I did provide a suggestion to expand the existing categories, especially now the platform is mature, which would make it less likely of choosing a more suitable assignment.

As someone who has been through the process on MakerWorld over 800 times, I have a bit of experience on the subject.

I believe I have answered the question which has been solved.

It would be very hard to “recognize” with a program what category a print should be in. MAYBE an AI could but even then it would be very error prone. A little improvement would go a long way.
One of the side affects is I assume BL is trying to show me what I might print. With the current mixture of categories it can’t effectively use it to boost its filament sales.

I see how adding more category seams like to solution. But it could be fewer is better. Many people don’t pay attention to parent categories.
The problem with too many cats is paralyzing for many. They cant choose.

having an algorithm suggest something would take too long for a real time form.
Maybe an auto change once submitted. With a weighting to the one the designer chooses. and it it is changed an email follow-up.
the category system is useless as it is.

Ok, I am dropping out. I have spent a lot of time answering your original question and the follow ups.

I explain the situation and provide a potential solution to fix what you believe is an issue.

There are no patent categories, just headings and categories.

You are concerned that designers are miscategorising their models.

I explained the poor selection of categories available that haven’t changed since launch are likely the cause due to not having a reasonable match.

You now think less choices might make the situation better. Given there are around 30 categories, which would you remove to get to a number that would make assignments easier?

To use your own example, gadgets and tools, do we remove those and if so where do you put gadget and tools?

Currently there is no category for fidget devices despite a significant portion of models falling into that category. The currently used category is other toys, yet, they are far more than toys as they are often used for mental or health issues. Should they be put in a health category or toys when a catchall of fidget would solve the whole issue with this singular example?

It appears you don’t like the answer.

I can’t help that.
