First Layer Rats Nests

Hey everyone,

My issues from a quality perspective with Bambu have been very few and far between; of the three, one was a one-off and I still have no answer, the other was their PETG OEM filament profile wasn’t working until I tweaked it (slight increase in retraction, lowering of temps, and now I can print another material-it is great), and this third issue is the most common problem I’ve faced by far. I can’t really reconcile it with any thing I’m doing, and this is in part because often (always?) this occurs when making several copies of a single item in a given print and the others will be fine. In the attached photo, 1 of 10 had this gross stuff on the base layer, I noticed it, skipped it in Bambu Handy, and the other 9 printed fantastic. Is there anything I can do to help this? I always let my machines auto bed level (P1S) unless I’m doing 5m prototyping prints or something quick, testing related, etc. so it would’ve gone through that process. This was a ~14 hour .2mm nozzle print, Bambu .1mm standard profile, but usually print with .4mm and standard and often see it there as well. The common deonimator seems to be that this happens when there is some type of inlay/text/multicolor geometry on the base layer. Is there some process or method of setting things up to correct or mitigate this? Any thoughts/ideas?

Clean plate?
Did you try the glue stick/bottle ?

So, theory is that it is a bed adhesion issue? I’ve PM’d the machines themselves, but haven’t ever had adhesion issues (except this, if that is in fact what the root cause it), even for small parts (a jig I printed is sitting in front of me that is about 1/2" square with a hole punched out of the middle, for example). Nearly 600 hours between the two of them, about 60/40 split. Haven’t ever used a glue stick, nor have I ever washed them. Every once in a while I’ll see the slightest residue from a print after it is removed but the next print removes it, so my thought process was ‘adhesion is almost a thing of the past, the texture grips it, and the prints bring the material with them as a rule’.

Does all of that make sense? I’ll give them a wash I suppose if you think that could be it; it is the stock plate that comes with the P1S. Dawn soap and warm water, paper towel dry?

Agreed…

What are your plate cleaning procedures and how often?

You shouldn’t need a glue stick with PEI plate and PETG.

Wash with soap and water. Thoroughly dry the plate. And then spray with Isopropyl Alcohol (IPA). Wipe the IPA off with a micro fiber towel.

Get in the habit of wiping the plate with the IPA and MF towel between every print and you’ll have very little adhesion issues with PEI plates and PETG.

Agreed.
You can get away with a lot using the textured PEI plate but for those holo plates and other smooth plates you do need them clean as.

I use the glue even on the textured PEI plate.
Not because I have to but because I can
Here is how I do things to ensure I won’t have to use lots glue >
You need a kitchen sponge or similar.
Cut a bit off to get a small and a large(er) piece.
Dab the glue pen onto the plate and use the small sponge to spread it.
Since this was the first time you now repeat the glue part but add a LITTLE bit of water onto the sponge.
Wipe again a few times.

You now have enough glue on the plate and a magic sponge.
After doing this 2 or 3 times the little sponge gets full of glue.
Simply add a bit of water to moisten the glue side and use it to apply a new layer onto the bed.
I can do this about 20 to 25 times before I need another load of glue…
Best part about it is that gives an even layer of glue on the plate.

I am having a very similar issue. I am getting a really bad first layer for some reason? SunLu PLA, Printing at 215. Cleaned plate, messed with filament and bed temperature, calibrated K value. I just don’t know whats happening.

Adhesion goes down the drain through contamination.
Finger prints, smudges from handling the plate, residue from printing…

Soap or dishwashing liquid removes fat/oil based stuff to some degree but binds with dirt and grime really good.
The alcohol takes care of what the soap can’t.

Soap is not soap and alcohol is not alcohol…
Grab a mirror, add some pesky finger prints and give your solution a try.
Clean with soap then rinse and dry off - clean means it works, streaks and such mean you try a different soap.
Similar for the alcohol.
Wet a paper towel or such and wipe over mirror to get the mirror wet.
Let the alcohol evaporate, don’t wipe it off.
Mirror is clean means it is clean alcohol.
Residue means there is other stuff as well in the alcohol.
For example rubbing alcohol is usually a bad choice.
Same for most methylated spirit bottles you find in hardware stores.

Hey rebbecaspires, welcome! I’m not on here all the time, but there are a few names I’ve seen over and over when I read.

Have you printed that model in the past? Once I made something and there was an ever so slight angle on the bottom keeping what was supposed to be the base from being parallel. Hence, problems. Just food for thought. On another note, I’m not a filament guru, but of the three mainlines I’ve used, SunLu is the only one I’ll likely never buy again (assuming they don’t offer some special color I need for a project or something). I’m happy with my Creality bulk 4kg for $40 or so black/white I got around turkey day/Christmas, but generally stick with Bambu stuff.

Hiya Cyre_Simard. No, I haven’t but it isn’t just this model I have had issues with. I am now running another calibration. My first few prints were perfect. I will check for the slight angle on the model! Thanks
