First time printing PETG, what could be wrong?

I’m printing PETG first time on my P2S using JAYO PETG. I calibrated dynamic flow rate, adjusted nozzle temperature (240) and dried my filament in a dehydrator for 8 hours (60 degrees), did one successful small print, then started this big print journey.

The only issue I can see is it struggles on the overhang printing. Nozzle moved super slow for the out wall, then super fast (>300mm/s) for the infill. The first 10 layers always have this sticking issue as seen in the pictures?


What can I do to improve this situation? Is this normal?

I’m not entirely sure I see which issue you’re referring to. The stringing (protrusion)?

Is that a translucent PETG? It probably wants to be hotter (nozzle) and slower. At least compared to Bambu and Overture translucent PETG I’ve used. Even the default Studio settings for Bambu PETG Trans. are kinda cool and fast… for good quality anyway. I’m using H2C. Don’t know anything about the JAYO filament.

With default slicer temps/speed I’ve had to save or facilitate a couple translucent PETG prints by pausing 'em and carefully cutting off bits of hardened protruding filament that the nozzle would bump on the next rounds. But mostly it just melts through those if they’re small enough (hairs).

The outer wall speed is probably set lower in the slicer? Not sure what you mean by “struggles”…?

And as everyone will tell you, dry it “until it stops losing weight.” 8 hours may not be enough. PETG loves moisture and Translucent loves to string especially.

PETG is not as forgiving on overhangs as PLA. If the angle of the overhang is less than 45 deg, the difficulty increases significantly.

Try drying the filament overnight. Another quick test is to run the printer in ‘silent’ mode which is 50% speed. That can tell you if print speed is an issue.

By struggling I meant it don’t melt through by one pass. Usually the next pass will solve some protruding issues but introduce a few more. You can see this happened only near the overhang area.

And here is my filament setup:


As you can see the overhang speed is only 10mm/s. I’m thinking maybe I should uncheck the “slow down printing speed for better lay cooling” for some test. Now I can’t stop as this is a 20+ hours printing.

I would start with the basics ensure you are using the parameter the manufacturer recommends. For your specific filament the recommended temp is between 230-260 so ensure you enter that on the slicer. The printing speed is between 40-200mm/s so keep printing speed between that range.

Old thread, but would recommend more dry and to slow down the general speed, not just the overhang speeds.

You’re pushing budget non-HS filament at 20mm3/s, material science is going to come bite you

Just an updates for those running into the similar issues. My problem is very likely due to two reasons:

  1. PETG is less tolerant than PLA so completely dry the filament is the way to go. It may not eliminate the problem but at least make it much better.
  2. I increased the overhang speed based on the angle, and that solved many of my PETG issue, imperfection around holes etc. There is another thread in the forum talking about increase generic filament’s overhang speed above 25mm / s. That seems works for me.
