Floating overhangs on second layer

So I have a custom model i’m doing for someone they made in tinkercad. This box shape was contoured and BS wants to set overhang walls floating way outside of the rest of the shell. When I enable support is doesn’t even trigger on that overhang… this piece is meant to not need support.

I’ve tried numerous settings but cannot seem to get BS to detect the overhang.

Any ideas aside from changing the file completely?

That’s like a 89.5 degree overhang for 2cm - and there’s not physically enough space under it to put supports.

Solve it a couple ways:

  1. Just “move” tool the whole model down, sink it into the plate about 0.8cm, and just simply cut off the bottom that is designed poorly

  2. Add a raft, so that there is now Z room for supports to generate and hold that area

Well… the customer was trying to avoid support/raft look.

I like the idea about cutting it like you said.

Any idea what might cause this in the print? Just crappy contouring by tinkercad?

Steep angles.

As things are built in layers, you need to make sure the design supports itself or you add supports to cater for the issue.

Needing supports isn’t a bad thing, it is required for many things due to physics, but many try to reduce or eliminate them.

The top layer can sit on the edge of the middle layer, the middle layer can sit on the edge of the bottom layer.

A series of layers that require support

Here the top layer has three perimeters that exceed the surface of the layer below that supports it. Only the closest to the edge of the middle layer can sit on the edge. The next two perimeters having nothing to the side or below to keep them up.

The middle layer has four unsupported perimeters that only one can possibly work.

To fix it, you have to enable support (or design it into the model).

The slicer will create the most efficient way for speed and limiting the amount of material required.

This is operator error not tool error, the design is bad to design objects with a bottom like this for 3d printing. Your designer is just lazily using pre-rounded shapes and stretching and skewing them.

If you cut off the bottom part that is awful, you reduce the actual size of the print, and maybe cut a hole all the way thru a “low floor” depending on your specific object. If the total height is important you might be able to bandaid over your cut by resizing in Z plane a couple percent to match original spec.

Thanks guys, his first version of the print didn’t have this issue, he had to make a size adjustment to fit his needs i’ll tell him to get back to it!

I just hadn’t come across this yet. Sounds like it isn’t something I can change in the slicer.
