For US residents who play baseball

Hi, hope forum don’t roast me for this :joy:

I am in Europe, I would buy one of those radars for baseball balls like the Bushnell or maybe the cheaper with tripod and big display. These aren’t expensive but I wouldn’t waste money, the answers I didn’t find are.

These devices works for getting birds speed ? They can get speed of other stuff like horses, dogs, cars, people running?

I had read a few feedbacks about the issues in getting balls speed

As you are aware, this is a 3D printing enthusiast forum.

The likelihood that you will get an answered will be limited by those with very specific knowledge also hanging out here.

You are better served looking for an enthusiast forum or reading the reviews on the product reviews.

@MalcTheOracle when did you move to America? We might have to shoot guns, watch football, eat burgers, drive pickup trucks, and wave flags on the side of the road sometime.

@Blaster The question is kinda vague. Some more info would be nice. I assume you are trying to find a cheap way to measure speed?

I do not play baseball, but it seems like those radars are a simple single beam device. Meaning that you are limited to the object/animal moving consistently in about the same place.

The easiest option would to set up a speed trap with some light sensors and a microcontroller. This would have pretty much the same limitation as the radar, but would only cost ~20 USD.

Another option, all be it largely more complicated, is to use video analysis. This is better because you are less constrained to the object only being in one place or on one axis. There are some smartphone apps that can do this, with lower accuracy. I use a similar method when working with machine vision. Problem is that there are not many off the shelf devices that do this. You are almost guaranteed to have to build something and do some coding.

Velocity is distance over time, its not terribly hard to calculate, but getting a good measurement is the hill to climb.

That doesn’t change the fact that you’re posting your request on the wrong forum. As Malc already pointed out above, this is a 3d printing dedicated forum, not a baseball one.

To try to be helpful, I wonder if a radar gun from off duty police shops would be able to clock a bird. Or maybe a phone w/ lidar although that is insane range for it…

I found it vague at least. I think it is important to establish what you are trying to measure because on device wouldnt be the best fit for all.

But yeah we are not experts on this topic. Just trying to think through the design process

Feedbacks on that exact product from int’l amazon portal are a doom scrolling of nothing that can answer my simple questions. someone wrote about the device unable to do its job, sometimes.

I saw those on ebay a dozen of years ago (250$ used with probably years of service) and those devices are just old, huge, expensive, 99% without healthy batteries, with a relative precision that is paid and not needed if the purpose is to measure how fast the cat runs up the stairs when I shake a box of dried food :melting_face:

Then, perhaps it’s better to look for your answers on a dedicated baseball forum/Redit group, and not on a dedicated 3d printing forum…don’t you think?!?

A video should be able to calculate the speed. You know the size of your cat, so can do the distance/frame calc. It’s less fun than pointing a device at her though :wink:

For something like running up stairs. All they really need is a stopwatch and a tape measure.

So I should place a gopro and then post process the files ? you can’t be serious. I already have a gps device that’s mostly used when going to race in a local track, I don’t like it so much because doesn’t give a fixed check point speed. (a cellphone does the same) then I am a metrology enthusiast I literally measure things for living. In the free time I play with a lot of other devices. I want a point-and-measure, it’s so weird?

they are lesser than 50$, then amazon int’l is just a joke and want to add 100€ for shipping while I’ve got Anycubic printers from china basically for free shipping on aliexpress?!

Look I paid 115€ for the 3 days int’l express on a huge box with a full yoshimura exhaust (that took 2 us internal planes before taking off to its final destination) my ethics can’t make me pay the same amount for a small toy :grimacing:
