Getting views, likes and downloads on MakerWorld (serious question)

No no no, this got out of hand quickly! I did NOT design the marble machine, that is all Martin and his incredible vision and perseverance!

There was an incredible community push for the MMX (his second version) with a lot of community driven designs to improve the MMX, of which I was one of them.

I did design a lot of mechanical improvements though of which he also implemented a bunch, sadly it wasn’t enough to save the MMX.

These are some of the videos I got featured in:

So THAT was my marble phase, not the whole machine, I hope that clears stuff up :joy: I am not that great of an artist and I do not possess that much perseverance. I just like technical challenges and this one sucked me in for months. So again, I did NOT design the marble machine

Ohhh. Luckey me, then i can still enter the contest…

Ahhh… so you were that guy who outsmarted him?

I feel so much better now :relieved:

But, you gave me a lot of inspiration and ideas… All of a sudden I am now thinking of this, while it really couldn’t bother me before. Hmmm. Thanks, i guess…

I was looking at your page and your earrings are cute. Most of the other models are fairly niche items though. Maybe work on a few things that would reach a wider audience to build up a larger group of followers. Look at the trending page and see what people are downloading and get some inspiration.

The overall quality of your photos fine, but they don’t jump out at me. I personally am not a big fan of phots where the background has been removed, and I like color. I am by no means a photo expert though and I don’t even own a camera. I’m just using my phone to take pictures, but I print in lots of colors and use different backdrops.

Thanks J_B_Custom_Designs for answering,

That’s again a great tip. Thanks. I will experiment with this.

Sounds like you’re doing most of the best practices. If you’re looking to create more viral objects, follow the trends closely and learn to make cute, multi-colored, easy to print objects.

On the flip side, whenever you do have something gain in popularity, you’ll never know exactly how popular it is because makerworld caps the download counts.

They only count the first 5 downloads/prints per “logged in” user per day across the entire site! Anonymous downloads don’t count. The 6th+ download for a given user isn’t counted.

Oh and once you’re swimming in points, gear up for defending bogus copyright infringement claims that take down your models and strip away all of the points they’ve earned.

I think most designers who cut their teeth on this platform will shift to hosting their best designs elsewhere.

Thanks for clarifying that! I’ve been trying to reconcile different accountings in the creator center vs counts on models and never could sort why they were so different.

Hi JJTechPrints, thanks for your reply,

Wow, I’m honestly a bit shocked by what you’re saying here. That feels incredibly unfair.

I’ve been in a similar situation myself, where I was punished for something that I truly believe wasn’t my fault. I had just earned enough points for my very first gift card, but then suddenly the gift card was denied, and my points were taken away. This was because, according to Makerworld, some people had liked or boosted my designs in a way that wasn’t allowed. They were friends of mine, so yeah, they might have liked things just because they were from me, but still it didn’t feel as if it was fair.

Thankfully, it wasn’t a huge number of points they took, but I still had to spend two weeks earning back the 60 points I lost. Only then was I able to get my gift card.

I didn’t agree with this decision at all, but what can you do when you’re up against such a big company? I just had to accept it.

Even now, I notice strange things happening. For example, I earn points for having good profiles (3 points for every 10 downloads), but I don’t see my downloads increasing at all. I have no idea why I’m getting these points, but I’m really worried about what will happen when I try to redeem my second gift card when I have enough points.

I can tell something isn’t right, but I have no idea what’s causing this issue. It isn’t my friends. I have asked them to please never ever like my designs ever again, and they have even stopped following my profile, just as I stopped following their profiles.
