So I have been loving this printer so far, after doing a chip clip with the provided white filament, I loaded up with some old ugly green filament (like really old like 6 years). It oddly print like a champ! Like only one semi failed layer on model I made myself, everything else (a mouse, scraper, poop chute and catcher and a few other things) printed flawlessly.
Then moved to some anycubic filament a purple PLA to reprint the mouse. That was a pain, kept kicking print off the plate with like 10 min to go (print head would snag the top of the mouse like the supports weren’t holding the fancy geometry of it down). Finally got it to print (was the left sided version), a few first layer issues with the white anycubic to print insides of mouse.
Then some more good prints (aside from the white anycubic spool being wound like ■■■■.)
So after that got new filament (esun) yellow…printed and got the worst first layer I have ever seen. (Pics mosted) was in motion though sorry thought they were better. Gave it another go, turned down bed temp from 65 to 60 and then got sort of better layers but as the bigger pieces were being built they peeled up some? I used to do 3d printing when it was hard was never great it, now that this ‘just works’ I forgot what causes the seen issues… that first go with the yellow esun filament was atrocious. Almost like the print head was going to deep or pulling off the filament and also it had like beads in it? I am letting this second go finish even thoug corners of the box and lid are peeled up some…but curious what I am doing wrong with this filament when everything else did just fine?!
Also its the default settings of the model as gotten from here:
Print bed temp 60
Hot end temp 220
it is generic PLA selected
(the pictures were meh sorry didn’t realize they were so bad but I think the idea is there.)
I will reprint these just want to know what better maybe settings to try next given this yellow is so fidgeting on the first few layers?
These are classic symptoms of a dirty build plate. Give the plate a good scrub with dish soap and hot water, being mindful to not touch the build surface with your fingers.
I think whenever we suggest to use soap and water that we also mention that IPA isn’t good enough because many people think it is equivalent and disregard the soap and water comment because they “already cleaned it”.
Thanks guys! This would make sense after many prints of me doing things and touching im sure. I will do that. (and that would of been me thinking IPA and call it a day )
IPA will still work if the plate isn’t too dirty. I use IPA about every 2 weeks or so, also when I switch from PLA to PETG.
I only use soap & water after using glue…this works for me.
Clean the plate with warm water and soap, rinse it thoroughly and then dry it thoroughly.
Once you return the plate to the printer, try a first layer print and see if the whole surface is smooth and the resulting sheet is in one piece when removed (all print lines are still connected.).
You can make one of your own, or use mine (or anyone else’s to do the check).
I used to use IPA in between cleanings with soap and water if I got a fingerprint on the build plate. I found that if I didn’t wipe up the IPA in less than a second, I could see a discoloration in the area where I wiped if the light was shining on the plate at the right angle, the discoloration is the oil just being spread on the plate.
I started using gloves a while ago and it is so much better. I can handle the plate in whatever way I want and touch any part without any worry of getting oils on the plate. I just make sure my fingers only touch the edge of the opening of the gloves when I put them on or off so I don’t get oils on the finger or palms of the gloves.
Since then I just wash the plate with soap and water periodically depending on how much I am printing. Although if I use hairspray on the plate, I will use some IPA to help clean it.
Ty for everyone’s input, did the test print. Not sure how conclusive it is. Def better!! But the left front is having issues still… maybe another cleaning? Getting there though pretty happy with this! It all makes sense too, I had done a ton of prints and my greasy fingers surely was touching the surface getting it off etc.
