H2C combining ASA+TPU problem

Hi there!

Printing with my H2C was nearly perfect till today :grinning_face: but now iḿ trying something more complex…

Iḿ designed a ASA part for the outside with a fixed TPU seal on it and run straight in problems.

TPU is BL 95a HF and ASA is generic from 3dJake, i printed both in seperat prints and they work fine. (TPU is right, ASA left.)

Multimaterial is another page…when the switch to the TPU layers happens the printer goes in error because “the Heatbreak temp is to high”. I can skip it but its just a loop were he again flusches the Nozzle, moves to the prime tower and goes back in error. All i got from this was a clogged Poop shoot because the TPU didnt want to fall down :roll_eyes:

So how do i get this done? Reduce the ASA Temps? (itś 10° more than the TPU while printing)

Can i deactivate this Alarm? (I know its there for a reason…)

Any tips for combining this two materials in the H2C?

There’s a setting in bambustudio (on the actual settings menu) to disable it, but do note that if you’re running the chamber heater for asa, and want to print tpu in the same conditions, there’s high chances of nozzle clogging

If you’re printing TPU on the right and ASA on the left, I don’t see how/why it would throw this error.

What ARE the actual temperatures of the hotends when this is happening?

I wonder if this could be as simple as blowing on the affected nozzle for a bit to force the temperature down before trying to dismiss the message?

Is there an error code or QR link displayed with this message?

Oh man you are really asking for it with all that heat.

ASA turns into a rock when it leaves the nozzle. TPU needs all the fresh air cooling in the world to do the same.

You are going to have a mess on your hands IMO. Pretty sure you will have to slow down your print speed and allow it what cooling the part fan can do at those temps as long a time as possible.

Or I fear you will be printing a blob of mess that hasn’t setup yet for the next layer. I guess it really depends on how big the TPU object and layer time is too at that point.

ASA’s Chamber heat and TPU might get real dicey, although thats not the specific error I was expecting. A heatbrake unable to get to below glass transition [ambient too hot] can’t function as a heatbrake so I get it

PETG and TPU combine very well because of no chamber heat, if your need case is fulfilled with petg.

Well i know it wouldn´t be “easy” but i saw so much MM parts out there in comparable conifgs

i thougth it might be doable.

So what i read between the lines here seems to indicate that not the Hotends near another

are the problem rather the chamber heater? Dont know how deep i can go till the ASA failes…

The Part is not really thick, its a curved plate of 3mm ASA wit a 2mm TPU seal on it.

PETG is not really an option because the place of use is in full sunlight….and in my experience

PETG dont like this very long.

So i surely wont kill my printer :zany_face:
I will try in CAD to model the seal diffrently so i can print it seperat….to bad tought this would be

What firmware are you using? I am currently printing ASA and TPU in the same print on firmware 01.01.05.00 and it works fine. It does give me a warning about the heatbreak temperature, but it allows it to continue printing.

I upgraded to the new firmware last night 01.02.00.00 and everything changed, and it now pauses the print and throws an error. I ended up trying it a few times, and each time I had no choice but to stop the print because of the error loop you mentioned.

If you find a solution using the new firmware please let me know.

For now I have rolled back the firmware to 01.01.05.00 and it is printing fine again.

i am also at 01.02.00.00 but i don’t want to bother with a downgrade yet.

As said i designed it in separate parts now….not my intension but i wasn´t wiling

to risk here something. But for the future it would be nice if this would work when you

say it “has” worked in the past….

Unfortunately, TPU just can’t print well at those temps. That doesn’t mean that it won’t work, just that its likely to be problematic. I haven’t tried it yet, but I assume the best way to fix this problem is to use the appropriate materials together. ABS/ASA and PEBA, or PLA/PETG and TPU. Low temp materials with low temp materials, and high temp materials with a higher temp flexible.

Didn’t try Peba yet…is it worth it in comparison with TPU?

I have printed TPU together with other engineering materials like PA and PPS. Here is a nozzle brush from TPU for AMS with PPS-CF tip for heat resistance. Main thing you have to do besides the already mentioned setting in BS is turn off the chamber heater and turn down the plate temp so the TPU wont fuse to it. For this specific project I used a G10 plate so the PPS would still bond to the plate at 50c, you can also use a strong adhesive like nano polymer on a standard plate. Beam interlocking must be turned on for any materials that dont bond to TPU chemically.
