Hello all, H2C noob here. Please help me wrap my head around this multi head printing and what the best settings are.
I am trying to use the vortek nozzle to use petg as a support filament for the left standard nozzle printing the actual piece in PLA.
in the bambu studio i have set the support to use the filament in the vortek head as shown here:
but my question becomes:
- when i select “enable prime tower” and set purge mode to purge saving, not only does it almost 2x my print time, but it 2x my filament usage.

if i select no prime tower and set the purge mode to “purge saving”
I notice the time drops by 3.5hrs and the filament used also drops considerably.
with this method however, the printer does a lot of flushing so there is a lot of poop out of the back and time used for this. i woudl assume this is still faster and uses less than the prime tower as thats what the slicer is saying???
Is there a setting that i am missing? shoudlnt using the prime tower(instead of a flush) for a print like this:
a. use less filament then flushing
b. speed up the print process?

I do not know if it works, but maybe you can try to only use PETG as interface for the support. With this setting the support will be printed from PLA but only the upper layer of the support will be PETG. (First box: standard; Second box: PETG)
With this setting you should have a lot less poop without the prime tower. A lot less print time.
A much lighter prime tower if it is enabled. (Which should be recommended, else you may have bad print quality or may even weaken the print) With only interface and prime tower enabled it will bee mostly hollow.
But this will only work in case both filaments do stick to each other in both directions in a good way. (I have never tried PLA + PETG, but I am doing the same with PPA and PC).

I agree with only using PETG for the Support/raft interface and leave the Support/raft base as default. Default will use the PLA for the supports. The interface is the only part of the support that touches the model.
I see what you are saying, and how that would speed up and cut down on poop but isnt part of the purpose of dual heads to be able to used in such a manner where its “cheaper” material for supports, while keeping the more expensive material out of the supports?
i guess i just thought if i did a prime tower, it should 1 use much less filament, and 2 be alot quicker than purging, considering im using 2 different heads and 2 different sources(straight pla roll for left nozzel and ams petg for the right) but it seems like its the opposite.

I didn’t buy an H2C so I could have support material in one printhead and regular filament in the other. I bought it because it is way more efficient than a standard dual head printer for printing multi-color models. I purchased two spools of polylmaker polysupport almost a year ago and still have most of it left. It works okay but it isn’t that much cheaper. I’m usually buying four rolls at a time from Bambu Lab because I like their filament and the fact that they have rfids on the refills. Buying in bulk like that usually comes out to about $13 a spool. The cost of using PLA/PETG for supports is not that big of an issue for me. I want faster multi-color prints.
Purging without a prime tower for your model does look like it uses less filament and does not take much more time to print but printing without a prime tower is not recommended if quality is of any concern.
You have to think if you’re using the support for all of the tree support the nozzle is having to swap to that each time, wasting time and filament during purging.
Using it for the interface on typical models means you’re not doing this and only on areas that need supporting which will be significantly less in terms of material and time.
