H2C purging at end of filament

I was a couple of hours into a print when the spool ended on my AMS HT. Printer said it was purging filament. It purged for about half an hour then said it failed. Why doesn’t it just spit out the piece of filament from the extruder back to the AMS HT instead of trying to purge it. I had it setup to use the same filament in one of my AMS 2’s.

Unfortunately, it can not pull back the filament once it has lost adhesion with the spool. So the only way out is through the nozzle.

I am usually glad if I spot a run-out as I can then cut the remaining filament above the nozzle, saving time and waste.
