I’m thinking of purchasing an air purifier(does it exist to remove the toxins?)and using it on a closed loop system. This way it’s easier and more efficient for the chamber to maintain temps.
Is this feasible?
More importantly, is it safe for the humans in the room/house and/or the printer?
It depends on who you ask. When in heating mode, the air is circulated through a filter. In cooling mode, it bypasses the filter entirely.
In my own tests using VOC meters, the air quality in the room has remained excellent thanks to my external smoke purifier.
That said, opinions vary. Some users here will claim my setup is ineffective or even dangerous — yet none of my pets have died, and they tend to be extremely sensitive to poor air quality.
That being said, never gamble with your safety — always check your air quality from time to time.

Not with anything other than PLA and PETG. When printing materials like ASA, PC, PAHT-CF, and similar, I always vent the chamber through an external filter once the print is finished.
I have mine in our basement rec room that is 28’ x 14’ and it has been running nothing but ABS. I noticed mild smell, but nothing too bad with the HVAC circulating air. I then used my air filter off amazon that has a HEPA filter along with a charcoal filter stage. With that there is no smell at all unless you go put your nose over the printer.

It would be helpful to know if there are any VOCs present in the air, and if so, at what levels.
I’ve never seen elevated VOC readings coming directly from the printer itself—but whenever I clean my build plates with IPA, the sensors go absolutely wild for a while. ![]()
I’ve got an H2D printer set up in my bedroom, not in a sealed or closed-loop enclosure, but I do monitor the air quality pretty closely. I’m using the IQAir AirVisual Pro, which is super sensitive (especially when soldering
) and an IQAir HealthPro (HealthPro 250 in the EU) for filtration when needed.
The purifier isn’t connected directly to the printer. I just turn it on whenever the PM2.5 level leaves the “green zone” or if the outdoor air quality is worse than inside. Otherwise, I’ll open the window for ventilation.
Here’s what I’ve observed during printing:
- PLA doesn’t noticeably raise PM2.5. Stays well under 10 μg/m³.
- PETG causes a slight bump, maybe 10–30 μg/m³.
- ABS and ASA definitely spike it, values can hit 100–200+ μg/m³ depending on room size and airflow.
So yeah, it’s totally feasible to manage air quality safely without a closed-loop system as long as you monitor and respond. A decent air purifier helps, but ventilation and awareness are just as important.
I’m currently recording PM1, PM2.5 and VOCs while printing and so far, even when printing ABS and ASA, I couldn’t record drastically increased readings. At least as long as there is not a minimal amount of ventilation. In my case, a tilted window is enough. PM1 and PM2 might increase over 10ug/m^3, but that’s all.
If I finally manage to sort out my data, I might make a separate thread for that matter…
