H2D Feature Request:By layer Color Switch

Not sure if thats possible with current settings or some way, but heres the idea. Say you wanna experiment and create new colors. You have red. and gray. If you print them by layer each, one red, one gray one red. you get a mix like this

I believe this could lead to some cool effects, by combining compatible filaments, and the H2D is especially good at this with its too nozzles.

It may look OK on the screen, but, in reality the effect of blending colours occurs top down. The top down effect will only work for around 1.6mm maximum depending on the layer thickness and colours used.

From the side, it will just look like strips. Unless you have poor eyesight, then it might blend a bit.

You could taper the effect by having each colour on the same layer in a grid pattern, dithered.

Having red printed under a thin gray, you will get a darkish-pink. Yellow over red gives orange.

Each of these will look like distinct colours in stripes otherwise.

Yes, I have observed the effect many times, mostly on supports and prime towers. Theres several nice combination like olive green and silver or yellow and red which gives a nice gradient orange.
Additionally, think of how dual color filaments work. this could enable the same thing but instead of the Y/X plane, on the Z

I can only assume you want the slicer to do it automatically rather than change individual layers manually ?

i dont think ive noticed colour blending on a model the same way it does with a prime tower

I am confused, the link shows something very different to your original question.

You originally provided a model image where alternate lines were different contrasting colours, which, when printed will remain visually distinct and nit blended as the link showed.

I earlier explained that the effect needs to be dithered to get the effect you seek.

I have made many of these a long time ago, this is one of the as it is illustrative of a rainbow.

This particular model used the top down approach of layering. It uses just 3 colours to provide the rainbow and white for the base. As you can see it creates 6 distinct colours and can produce far more.

None of this is rocket science, just careful attention to how layers of distinct colours are produced. In the sane way an inject printer (or artists palette) achieves it.

Here’s a customizer I made that does something similar. It’ll take a model and convert it so that it prints a gradient using two solid color filaments.

thats the exact same thing. you might want to zoom in on the pictures in the link. the colours are again achieved by stacking the appropriate colours on top of and besides each other.

It maybe that your original image and description lacked the clarity you wished to share, but they are not the same thing.

What you call dithering is just extra. The principle is the same. What we need is an automated way of setting the switching colours, and a brush tool to apply the effect. Think outside the box, your mind is stuck on “but its too distinctive colours”. Yes and no, and so is dual color filament. perspective and layer height will define how strong the effect is, and even if too distinct, as i said there are combinations that would make really nice effects.

it would be more optimal if it could be used with a brush tool where you set filament A and filament B to be used in succession. This would allow the effect to apply on controlled walls too and not all the way to the infill, and you could make even more combination for custom colouring. Infact with an H2C this would be really amazing I believe. Imagine you are 3dprinting a rose, but instead of green leaves you blend green and silver and for the petals gold and red.

Paint uses vertical and horizontal lines of differing sizes already,

then think about how much work has gone into actually preventing, what you are asking, from happening

Add a small primitive and try to do it , manually by layer or with the paint tool, see how you get on

Then you have to make it by hand. If there was a way to make the A-B switch on each layer, could be implemented as a brush too. These are two different things

Ive already made a way to apply that to 0.2 layer slicing, but on a full plate area, not by handy tools.

a simple model with flat wide rectangles of 0.2 height, every other 0.2mm of Z is not really something i can “sell” on github i guess.
Im gonna upload the model on makerworld tho for anyone who wants to experiment.
I found a nice side effect. While printing with Translucent red and regular gray petg, the end result is something like darker gray with bourdeaux hints. BUT once you shine a light behind it turns from gray to red . This could be implemented in lightboxes or lithophanes
Here are some photos from my first attempts with trans red and regular gray petg, and blue/red abs.
on the red/blue ignore the first layer, the trans red petg from the previous run decided to jam the extruder and i had to slap it back to reality.
unfortunately for now im unable to capture the effect with the light that i described above as the only available strong led is the phones flashlight with which I shoot the photos. It needs to be behind the model.

As a person who likes to draw in colour i understand light and angles are everything

The effect will be much better if you lower your layer height to something like .08

Soooo Bambu seemed to like the idea so much they implemented it in Bambu studio! Props to you my guy!
