H2D - Filament Buffer no longer gripping PTEF Tube

My H2D filament buffer seems to have lost the ability to grip the PTEF tubes. This happened on the internal power connector of the buffer (for the PTEF tube that runs to the nozzle).

I had to change out the PTEF; my prior one was showing signs of wear. I held the orange part of the buffer to immobilize it, and pushed in the black ring to pop out the tube. Once I exchanged the tubes… the PTEF tube no longer gets locked into the filament buffer. It goes in a fills like it “clicks in” but then pops back out.

Anyone else have this issue? Anything I should try? I already ordered a replacement filament buffer… I am now just trying to avoid the operation of changing it out.

This can happen with any coupler if the PTFE tube is pulled out by force. Always press the release and push the PTFE tube in slightly to disengage the teeth before removing it.

I’m not completely sure whether the coupler can be replaced separately on that specific unit, but if it’s a standard coupler it should be possible. If not, you may need to replace the entire buffer.

As @L0rdS474n already mentioned, never pull it out directly.

In my opinion, 2 things could have happened.

  1. You damaged the teeth that grip the PTFE tube.
  2. You scraped some PTFE from the tube and that debris is causing your issue.

For 1 you need to replace the connector, or in worst case the entire buffer.

For 2 you might be able, with some effort, to get the debris out and have it functional again.

Lets hope for the last.

For me the filament has pushed the tube out more than once and that ruined the teeth on the connection. I am about to swap out the filament buffer (for the second time) - we have already replaced one on a different machine as that one was catching the filament and not letting it pass through - so this will be our third new buffer on two H2D machines in less than a year. I have had more problems with this one part of the machine than anything else on any of my Bambu printers… this is the achilles heel of the H2D in my opinion… I have ordered more and will keep them on hand to plan to change regularly.

You might open a ticket. You are still in warranty.

Did you check your PTFE length? The earlier PTFE tubes were on the short side, causing the buffer to make weird noises when printing front left of build plate.

Yes, I have replaced both tubes (more than once) we run these printers non-stop 24/7 so it has a lot of hours on it already even in the first year. We also print a lot of glow filaments - which tear up all parts they touch - specially plastic and tubes all wear out really fast. I will know more when I take it apart. I have spare buffers (they are not expensive) I think by design. When we disassemble I will check magnets, springs, worn areas, tube inserts, etc.

Took the unit out tonight and replaced with a new one - machine is back to running perfectly. I did have to change all of the tubes - they were ready for replacement - I think the block we had on the left nozzle was actually the bit of PTFE tube that goes inside the filament buffer, the guide that feeds the tubes down into the buffer doesnt seem to always get it right where it needs to be. The magnets were in their slots correctly. The top black connector for the tube was shot - it would not pull out from the housing - it just stayed “pushed in” … if that makes sense. I could not get it to grab the tube and I did not want to deal with it again after reinstall.

How hard is it to replace the whole buffer?

I’ve also had the same issue as you where the PTFE tube has randomly been pushed out of the buffer (on the insides, the tube coming from the extruded to the buffer) during prints. Every time I have been able to just push it back in no problem. Today however the buffer isn’t holding the tube in.

I run this printer 24/7 for my business so don’t really have time to go through the warranty process. Might just buy a buffer and replace it.

Looking at the Wiki Replace H2D / H2C Filament Buffer and Cable | Bambu Lab Wiki , it shouldn’t be that hard.
