H2D Heat Creep?

We have a new H2D and we were doing some prototyping with ABS. Long prints using nearly 1kg of filament at a time. Eventually we had an instance where the ABS melted in the tube above the hotend. I chalked it up to long difficult prints. I replaced that part and I haven’t had a chance to figure out how to clear the jam, maybe a long needle I can get screaming hot and push through the tube. Anyway the first time printing since the replacement and it did it again, this time it was a short print and it was with PLA. I’m not getting any error codes other than the filament won’t load. New to this, where do I start?

It could be your hot end fan failing. It is an underspecified part that doesn’t like high chamber temperatures. Mine failed resulting in a lot of extrusion failures.

Yeah, that’s an odd one. Never had heat creep on my H2D, and especially wouldn’t expect that from ABS. Check what Paul B mentioned. Also if you are in an extreme environment, they created a auxiliary hot-end fan for a reason, so that may be an option too. All that said, I’m still thinking something broke, because it takes a lot of temp to soften and melt ABS in the cold side of the hot end. Check for other issues like incorrect installation of the nozzle also. That sounds like a fault in hardware somewhere. Another check is maybe swapping nozzles. Maybe the nozzle was made poorly and has a defect. If you swap the nozzle and the creep occurs in the new position, you can relatively confidently assess the nozzle as the problem.

Well dang it. I tried the nozzle swap and in the process I tore one of the ribbon cable sensors. I’ll have to order another one and get back to this.

I’m guessing if you did something weird like leaving the hotends powered without printing or having the device in a very hot room, just guessing.

about the left hot end failure, The insulation on the power cables of my left hot end also crystallized. Once I noticed the cable, the wire started bending until it began losing contact. It can happen that they protrude too much and “cook” even just from the radiant heat of the bed, so it’s better to check them and, if needed, reposition them more securely and far from the plate, perhaps with suitable tape.

it’s 2700h now, I guess if at 3600 i will have to get another hot end part

Sorry to hear of the accidental break. Also note, I think I said something wrong. That should have been, switch them around and see if the fault only follows one nozzle. If one nozzle always works and one always doesn’t it should be clear how to proceed.

I have not progressed to “difficult” filaments yet, but this sounds relevant. There is an auxiliary hotend fan option for the H2D? Is that an official Bambu Lab part or some third party or community add-on?

I believe it was specific to the H2C, but they later opened it to the H series.
