H2D Layer Problem ( Beginner)

Hi everyone,

I’m new to 3D printing and recently got an H2D. I was really happy with it, but lately, I’m having problems.

The printer has around 200 hours of printing and worked great before. I used Bambu Lab filament, always dried. Mostly PLA, a few times PETG and ABS, all without issues.

Now it can’t print the first layer anymore.

I already changed the nozzle, tried a cold pull, and even different filament that worked before (also dried). No success.

I allways used the standard settings but reduced the print speed by half. Still no luck.
I also ran calibration again, but it didn’t help.

Any ideas? Thanks! I can upload photos if needed.

Which plate are you using and how are you cleaning it?

In particular the Textured PEI works well with mild contamination for a while. Until the grime, dust and residue accumulates in the valleys and nothing sticks anymore.
Dishwashing liquid, a clean stiff brush, plenty of water and copious amounts of muscle grease are called for in these instances…

Hello and thank you,

I’m using the Textured PEI plate and I already cleaned it with dish soap.
But the problem is still the same. I’ll try cleaning it again just to be sure.

When you wash it give it a really good scrub.

Don’t be afraid to be rough on it with a stiff dishwashing or nail brush. You really do need to go deep and possibly need to repeat it 2-3 times. In particular with a mixture of PLA & PETG dust & residue on the plate.

Once you have exhausted that route, it would be good to run a 1st layer adhesion test. Place a cube primitive in the slicer, adjust its size to get close to all edges but only a single layer (usually 0.2mm) high. That’ll hopefully show an even layer. If not, we can look at further items depending on the error pic.

Hello,

Thanks for helping. To be honest, I washed the hell out of it, and it helped.
But now I’m running into a new problem: after a few layers, the print starts to warp at the corners.

I increased the bed temp to 60, but the warping is still there.

Warping with which material? ABS? That’s normal with ABS. Increase chamber temp (60°C) and have bed temp at about 90°C

Also the build plate needs to be clean. Wash with detergent.

Trying to print with BL Basic PLA Black

Warping happens when a still warm layer cools down on top of cooler layers, shrinks as a result and hence pulls up the edges of the print.
The first step to counter this is to dry the filament. New filament has been on an extended sea voyage in bags that slow, but do not stop moisture ingress. So it should be assumed moist. After drying, it’ll print much better.
The second step is to keep the build volume warm. Warm is relative though as too high a temp can lead to heat creep. With PLA, aim for 35°C.

There are further steps (mouse ears/brim, layer height reduction, slow down), but the basics (clean plate, dry filament, warm chamber) usually cover the vast majority of issues.

I dried the filament, so I’ll try raising the chamber temperature. Is it normal to have problems after a few prints?

That very much depends on the print :sweat_smile:
But yes, it is normal to run into problems after a few prints due to bed adhesion problems starting to occur or…
increased ambitions leading to more challenging printing tasks :+1: :wink:

I would recommend you reduce the AUX fan speed, especially on larger PLA prints. The standard speed on PLA profiles is 70% but thats way too high. I have mine set to 50% and when its a larger item I turn it off completely. The AUX fan is meant for when you are printing a smaller item and the layers dont have time to cool before the next layer starts printing. On any medium or large items it just causes warping. Also if the temp in the printer room is cold is just exacerbates the issue. If it is in a cold room, you can also turn down the exhaust fan together with the AUX.

I would also recommend you get a Kdavi or Frostbite plate for PLA/PETG as they permanently solve the PLA/PETG plate adhesion issues. The grip on those plates does not get reduced nearly as much with time like with textured PEI. They have an oleophobic coating to prevents oils from sticking. They also have the secondary benefit of reducing warping as the adhesion is so good.

Sorry to throw that in on you. But maybe one nozzle is loose you know the clip is not sitting right and it can kind of wiggle around. Just to check, I had this once myself and this was the last thing I was checking since I thought you must be able to close this clip and cannot fail with this… but I’ll guess you can never learn enough.

Overkill. I clean my plates with Dawn Power Wash Platinum and paper towel.
