I’ve been thinking about all the quirks of nozzle preference in the H2D. (I think these are correct.)
TPU on the right side (manual load).
AMS on right side.
Single color print jobs, right side.
Brittle CF nylon (PPA-CF / PPS-CF) left only.
Generic support material left side.
High Flow hot end (no TPU)
Bambu Lab’s history seems to be about making 3d printing more straightforward and this contradicts that. But it starts to make sense if they were expecting to have an AMS with two outlets but couldn’t solve the technical issues with it. The slicer would work out where the best nozzle to feed the filament and unburden us from needing to know. Hopefully, at some point in the future we’ll get that dual port AMS.
You CAN have AMS on either/both sides – “they” recommend only on the right because the left nozzle is the one that moves - the right is stationary … less likely for failures due to swaps, etc.
Yes, you can feed whatever you want into either side but they just have recommendations for where things should go and it could be automated if the AMS had dual ports.
Would be quite more complicated to route things if it’s having dual ports, had some discussion with other friends previously regarding to the same topic. Best way is to add a lever that is pushed by the toolhead, which allows redirecting the filaments. But that’s quite a bit of additional work and basically a imaginary solution.
But, Bambu is really doing some weird decisions here, like they allow you to connect a total of 4+8=12 AMS units, but only 4 of them can be the 4 slot AMSs… which makes no sense to me.
Im weird. I run as much stuff as possible on the right nozzle because its solid mounted and only use the left side if im running more than one filament. Even brittle stuff in the right nozzle. I only use the bypass for tpu.
the challenge is how do you route the filament inside the AMS. The current design is a simple 4in 1out with assisting motors. But if you want it to be able to choose which outlet it goes to, then that would require a moving part that can move the internal tubes to the correct outlet. This can be a highly risky thing to do because the filaments are good at breaching any gap in the filament path.
Based on the original patent that bambu filed, I dont think they were trying to have one ams feed both nozzles, but rather one ams be able to feed either nozzle. A switching 4 to 1 unit that could choose between the 2 outputs/nozzles but couldnt feed both at the same time. My guess was that a finance guy ran the numbers and figured out it would sell less ams units.
