H2S Filter and ABS

I currently have no way to run “extra” ventilation but need to do a few prints in ABS is the current state of the H2S filtration system “safe” to run it will the chamber filter the fumes? i do run a HEPA air purifier system in the room, but it’s not vented to the outside .

update after 6 prints with ABS i can say the h2s is perfectly fine with my current level of filtration 0 Oder

If the room is unvented I would say no for prints longer then 20 minutes. I’m not convinced the charcoal scrubs everything. If you don’t go into the room for a good amount of time after the print it should be OK occasionally. That is my opinion though and based on nothing.

Personally, I think the filtration is very good, I really can’t smell the ABS fumes at all until I open the door of the printer. It’s a pretty small room too.

Unfortunately lack of smell doesn’t always mean the gas is at a safe level.

The opposite is also true: you can detect odors far earlier—and at lower concentrations—than most sensors can measure. I’ve run VOC meters for some time and print everything from ASA to POM without any concerning readings. It’s important to rely on data, not fear.

What type of tool do you use to measure VOCs? I would like to do the same

Fair, i tend to treat an enclosed space woth more care though.

You can use one like this Amazon.se
But be aware that they are not as precise as lab equipment.
That one from Amazon needs to be started in clean environment to calibrate the sensors.

I run a cheap IKEA ($35) air purifier converted to carbon + HEPA that stands right beside the printer. Also the printer is inside a washrooms (converted to printer room) that is attached to my office and when I print ABS/ASA/Nylon I turn on the air evacuation.

Hi, I have the H2D in a small cellar around 8m2. There is a small ventilation with a small tube which I can’t regulate.

Does this filter would help for materials which are not PLA, PETG and TPU?

Or is the UPPÅTVIND with the carbon filter modification better?

In my opinion the UPPÅTVIND conversion is better. I looked at the other IKEA air purifiers at the store before buying the UPPÅTVIND and the amount of carbon they put in their filters is very small. It was designed for casual home use, not for the demanding 3D printing environment. I think the amount of carbon I have in my UPPÅTVIND conversion is at least 4x more then the FÖRNUFTIG if not more. Also as its smaller in size, I was able to place it right beside the printers exhaust.

They say its up to 7m² rooms. Just make sure to swap the carbon every 60-90 days and the HEPA more frequently (than their recommendations) as well if you print a lot of ABS/ASA that has styrene.

I think I can extend the lifecycle. ABS is very rare. Most prints are tpu and all sorts of PETG and PLA.

I guess I only have to use the purifier only with ABS or maybe a 6 hours PETG print, right?

I have mine always running, PLA and PETG output VOCs.

Holy ■■■■. I have to find the carbon filter in the correct size somewhere in Germany or Switzerland.

This could be something else oder additional.

I have an internal filter I designed that I run as well. You want to be real careful about restricting the airflow on the exhaust as it can cause problems like heat creep etc, thats why I did not put a HEPA in my design and just use the external HEPA IKEA. The one I designed has honeycomb structure to ensure good airflow and will not restrict it.

Built my own AQMs, running 3 plus a Dyson fan in another room for comparison data.

My nose does not always detect VOC build up reliably and I have the modified Ikea Uptavind air purifier running in what is a small room.

I’ve found the best way to shift VOC build up is by airflow, room is upstairs in my house and even though I leave a small window open VOCs will rise unless I have other windows open upstairs to move airflow through the room as well.

VOCs are annoying as a high concentration isn’t necessarily a harmful high concentration - some VOCs can be harmful as low as 30ppb or all the way up into the 10,000s ppb.

I’m running the following sensor with many being found in commercial AQMs:
AHT20 + BMP20 for temperature and RH
SCD40 for CO2
PMS5003 PM 1, 2.5 and 10 sensor
SGP30 for VOCs
SGP41 for VOCs (this one outputs a 0-500 reading with <100 very good, 100 normal and >100 bad)
ZE08-CH20 for formaldehyde (got a resin printer on order)

Currently 3 units and they all report to Home Assistant where the data is logged and I can track trends.

I’ve discovered that aerosol sprays (wife’s bodyspray for example) really spike the VOCs and then take a long time to drop down again, up to 2 hours. I don’t see any PM issues from the H2D (nearly always at 0 for all 3) although soldering and lasering do see some rises albeit well within safe exposure levels.

I guess my point is you need to understand your ‘normal’ readings and then see how printing changes them. Otherwise you could blame the printer when something else is the cause.

Finally I can’t understate the value of good airflow, a filter can only do so much whereas good ventilation with both extraction from the printer and an airflow path through the room make the largest impact.

Also farting results in a rise in VOCs… :rofl:

Would be great if there would be a cheaper solution of the xTool SafetyPro AP2 running indoors.

I also have a hose adapter for the IKEA purifier to turn in into a cheap smoke purifier. You can print multiple IKEA HEPA frames to stack them to make it filter better. It wont be as good as the XTool most likely but it will be a lot cheaper.
