Hardened nozzle scraping plate and overextruding?

I just swapped out my a1’s stainless nozzle for the hardened. Both .4.
When I put the hardened it sounds like it’s scraping the plate horribly. It also manages to scrape a print off the plate after a couple of layers and it even looks like its overextruding? Not sure what the deal is, I adjusted the settings to the new nozzle, did a full calibration and tightened the hot end screws. Still had the same issues. Mainly the scraping (sounds horrible). Put the stainless back on and it printed buttery smooth with no issues.

Am I missing something or did I get a defective hot end?

I keep the hardened flavor in my A1’s full-time specifically because I couldn’t detect any difference between std.

I find that when re-seating the nozzle in A1, if you trim the stump of filament even further down than where the cutter leaves it, it helps the magnet seat the whole thing “up and in” a lot better. Maybe worth trying but I suspect something more major.

Ive gone in and put the hardened back in, really took my time to check it and get it seated all up in there. Doing a test print again now to see if it does the same as before. If it does, then I’m writing it off as a defective hot end. Can’t risk it just eating the plate.

And same as you, I just wanted the hardened one to be the main nozzle as I’ve heard there’s no difference and I have some infused filament I was planning on printing

Yea, just tried it again and had to stop it after the 1st layer (was printing another filament card for testing) it’s just scrapping that plate and the print is all blotchy?

By any chance did you up your heats any? I know when I upgraded to my hotend I had to up the temps.

I have if at 220 for pla, but I can turn it up some more. But that still doesn’t explain why it’s gouging my plate.

Did you run calibration after changing the hotend?

I did the calibration after swapping the hotend.

Someone hacked bambu cloud and intercepted your gcode files, injected a Z-0.10 in there or something

I dunno, got nothin, does the problem follow the nozzle? AKA switch back to standard and now problem is gone? If so I’d rightly send your best AI assistant at bambu’s AI assistant and see about a new nozzle.

Yep, switching back to the SD and it prints crisp without dragging. For what it’s worth, noticed this.


I really hope that the auto-z catches that and is unflinching about the minor difference, since it taps to zero, lol, but idk.

I gave up. I tried everything. Writing it off as a faulty hot end.

I swapped out a hotend on the X1E because we haven’t been able to get past the z-homing error. Bambu recommendations were followed and the last resort was to replace the hotend.I ordered multiple hotends. After replacing the bent toolhead with another hotend, my plate has been getting scraped. Also, it makes no sense how the lidar will continue to scrape against the plate, without a protection measure? It’s cheap.

They sent another hot end. Will see if it fixes it once it arrives

I am penalizing myself. Issue > z-homing issue, lidar issue, scraping issue, > verify this component has been removed during initialization.

Any news? Did you get the new hot end ? I’ve switched to 0.4 hardened recently and having exactly the same issues - 1st layer comes very rough, and next layers are scraped.

I’ve also noticed all hardened nozzle I have (0.4 and 0.6) are slightly longer.

I trying to see if adjusting G29.1 Z{-0.02} line in start g-code will help but I’m surprised the default value are not affected by nozzle type since the lengths vary.

EDIT: G29.1 Z{-0.02} → changed to G29.1 Z{0.00}, printed small rectangle and significantly better looking surface, I’ll go back to -0.02 and tighten screws per wiki to do more tests.

EDIT2: Found that four screws at the back of heater assembly are bit loose so did the the following (per wiki): “Flip the heater assembly over to access the 4 small screws at the back and use an H1.5 hex key to retighten the screws…” , ran full calibration and reverted machine code tweaks. Samples looks much better.

I’m also very curious if the new hotend fixed it for you! I just put in my new hardened steel nozzle and am having the same issue, unfortunately. Scratched the ■■■■ out of my plate and won’t print anything–failed 3 prints right out of the box.

I also just received my first hardened steel nozzle for my A1 which has been running perfect 2 years straight! However and started to get the really rough first layer as well with the new nozzle. Fully calibrated the printer and ran 2 more prints and both failed. Put my original nozzle back on and perfectly smooth. Anyone know what’s going on here? No options to choose the Harden Steel nozzle in the software?

Are you changing the nozzle on the printer settings?

The first nozzle I had was horrible with scraping. Got it swapped to a different one and it was better. It finally stopped scraping when I switched also to the smooth plate. I think there’s an issue when it tries to set the Z axis on the textured plate.
