Has anyone actually tested the Foreign Object Detection feature (or whatever it’s officially called)? Does it work as intended for you?
I tested it just today to see if it would detect that there was already a print sitting on the plate. My expectation was that during the startup routine, when the printer does this check, it would detect the existing object and either abort or at least prompt me on what to do.
What actually happened was that the nozzle drove straight through the existing model (a single-wall hollow print, specifically to avoid damaging the system) and just continued printing as if the plate was empty and clean.
Does this feature actually work correctly for anyone? It feels like we have a bunch of “safety” features that are supposed to protect the printer or the print, but don’t actually function as advertised.
Running latest firmware and latest Bambu Studio — what else can I test to verify whether this feature works at all? Right now it clearly doesn’t, alongside several other features that trigger false positives. The classic one being “Filament filled up waste bin” — most of the time there isn’t even a single piece of filament in there when it triggers.
Yep. I was standing there and saw a peice of filament popped to the middle of the bed while doing its start up stuff and my arm triggered it just reaching in and brushing it away with a paint brush. Not sure that was a good test, but it did bonk at me and flash red.
I’ve accidentally left a scrapper on my build plate once (H2D) and a rag after maintenance (H2C) and the AI has caught it before the print started. Its worked good for me. Hopefully i’m less careless in the future…
I have the open door feature enabled, which pauses the print, so that would not have been a valid test in my case.
The object left on the plate was bright orange, so it should have been easy to detect. I also tried with white filament on a black build plate and it still failed to detect it, continuing as if the plate were clean and ready for printing.
I never explicitly tested it, but all the cases, there was a foreign object, or I was removing some particles from the build plate during startup, triggered an error for me.
Never had false positives, but also, no false negatives.
There are some warnings about having black parts on a dark build plate though. Your bright part, should not give an issue imho.
Weird, I will clean all cameras and try again.
Some day the mind will be elsewhere and I forgot that it’s not ready for printing and that day I hope this will function as it should…
I had a sad scenario just now actually where it didn’t see a horizontal prime tower on the bed when a new print was being started. It consequently dragged the nozzle head through it with some force and cause the nozzle to twist in it’s housing; drag along the bed(gouging an inch scratch area out of it) and rip the front nozzle cover off..
Luckily I heard it whilst in the same room and was able to immediately turn the power off to rescue it from any further self infliction.
I was very disappointed this wasn’t detected during the print calibration routine.
