I have little experience with this because it’s only happened once 3 years ago. I took the head out and disassembled the extruder. But the tiny cables are fragile. AI tells me a cold pull will clear it, but it didn’t. Heated to 240° I can’t push new filament into the top. I can’t seem to push a needle in from the bottom. Do I really need to disassemble the extruder again?

Do more cold pulls, or keep trying to unplug using a needle. You may also try running a higher temperature prior to using a needle.
From what I can see it looks like you might have filament bunched up against the head an if that is the case you will need to take the extruder apart.
You were right. I bit the bullet and disassembled the extruder and cleared a bit of clog. Put it all back together and got 10 minutes into the new print and it stopped extruding again in the same way. The filament is Bambu matte black. I can’t decide if it’s a bad spool (80% used okay) or something is going wrong in the print head.
Are you printing with the door closed? Sounds like heat creep, make sure the heatsink of your nozzle is super clean so the fan can keep the heatbreak cooled properly!
I have never paid much attention to the door. It was probably closed, and has never been a problem over several years.
Could the PTFE tube going to your print head be worn and dragging on filament as it’s passing through it?
Unplug the PTFE at your AMS and at the print head, try to manually move filament back and forth, it should travel very easily. Drag means you have a pinch, a tight bend, or a badly worn interior.
It seems free. I disassembled the extruder but that seems to have been unnecessary, it was free moving. I had a spare complete hot end in reserve and put it in. Trying again with a different filament and it’s printing like the champ I am used to.
Can it happen that a spool of PLA has a patch of bad material?
My X1C has been a workhorse used nearly every day for years. I come to take it for granted, and when it stops working, I am stunned and in shock. I can’t manage without daily access.
